How To Choose a Summer Camp

Posted by Brittany White on Feb 29, 2016 5:12:14 PM

With summer just around the corner, time is ticking and the pressure is on to find the right summer camp in San Diego for your kids! There are so many summer camp ideas for kids in San Diego...But don’t worry! You’re not alone and we have put a helpful guide together to help you choose a summer camp!

1.  The first and most important thing is the staff:

Every parent is worried about whom they will be leaving their children with all day and that is a completely normal and important concern. That is why it is important to look for a camp which hires experienced staff that will make you and your child feel comfortable. The more experience the better! Try and look for staff that is child friendly and will help your kids feel welcome when they come to camp alone. Other than the friendliness, make sure the camp leaders have been thoroughly inspected by the organization and have passed a security check. If you aren't sure as to what reputable staff looks like, take a look at the EvOLvE list of friendly teachers and read about how we select our awesome staff!

2.  Look at the goals:

When doing your summer camp planning, it is important to look for the goals that they have set for the children! Make sure summer is not only a time for fun but for learning as well. The best camps will provide a variety of activities for your children which will enhance your child’s learning skills, and improve their social skills along with teamwork! Look for a kids summer camp which really emphasizes the skills you would like your child to develop and is supportive in your child’s dreams!

3.  How hard do they push?

It seems like a weird question at first but it’s definitely one of some importance. During a day camp your child will be kept busy with different sorts of activities. Although these activities can be healthy and beneficial, it is important to not push children too hard and allow them plenty of breaks. Ask about the amount of breaks they will be getting throughout the day, how many potty breaks, snack breaks, etc. What about downtime? Is there a time in the schedule when the kids can take a break from all of the commotion and listen to a story or take a short nap? Even with just a day camp, kids might get overworked and tired so be sure to check if the kids summer camp you’re looking at provides the right combination of fun and relaxation. For a great reference on how a camp schedule should look like. Check out San Diego's EvOlvE's camp schedules and Chicago's camp schedules SummerCampSanDiego

4.  Communication

As a parent, it is not pleasant being left out of the loop and not knowing what your child is up to all day. Make sure that the camp you are looking at supports open communication between parents, staff and children. Also, as a parent, you want to stay included in the summer camp planning and have access to any information about your child at all times. It makes you feel comfortable and safe leaving your child in their hands every day.

5.  Fun!

Last but certainly not least, ask yourself if your child will really enjoy this camp! Don’t settle for an average summer camp. Summer is a time for adventure and fun, a time to let your child’s curiosity soar. Dance to EvOLvE prides itself on providing children opportunity to have an amazing time learning and creating with their wonderful teacher. Kids love it and it's not only fun but also beneficial for them. So talk with your children and find out exactly what they want and sign them up for a camp, such as a summer dance camp in San Diego that will provide them with a variety of activities, challenging and fun, and one that they will miss when they are finished! This will save a huge hassle of having to switch camps or rearrange plans!

Make the most of this summer and be smart with your decisions! We hope you consider some of these questions when searching for a summer camp in San Diego.

New Miramar Location for Kids Dance Classes!

Posted by Brittany White on Feb 22, 2016 2:01:34 PM

As many people know, San Diego is worthy of the name, "America's Finest City". With the perfect weather, beautiful scenery, and endless activities, it is truly one of the best places to be. Dance to EvOLvE has proudly been a part of this wonderful city for eight years, and we are so excited to continue our involvement in San Diego. That being said, we now get to provide children's dance classes in Miramar! Miramar has so much to offer with countless kids activities, a less than 20 minute drive to the beach, and is also home to the Marine Corps Air Station.

This air station is named Mitscher field after Admiral M.A. Mitscher who was a commander in World War II. Most people, however, know this site as the location where the movie, TOPGUN, was filmed, in response to the training program that was offered here.

In addition to TOPGUN, this air station is also home to the Miramar Air Show! This is one of San Diego's most popular events. At this show, visitors have the rare oppportunity of seeing the talented Blue Angels, the Navy's top pilots. Our new location, held at Flip Force, is literally right across the street from this Air Station. How Cool!

Another great thing about our Miramar location is the surrounding shops! While your kids are in class, get a membership at the 24 Hour right down the street and get a workout in of your own! Or, UTC mall is only a short 10 minute drive away!  After class, grab some pizza at That's Amore or get some grocery shopping done at Miramar Cash and Carry!  Flip Force is also centrally located in San Diego between the 805 and the 15. This results in easy access from anywhere in the city. Miramar is a wonderful are and we are so excited to add to the list of kids activities in Miramar.

We hope you will take advantage of this new location and join us at Flip Force. Dance to EvOLvE is always seeking to enrich the lives of our students and make a positive impact on them. We also truly believe in the impact that dance has on kids. It helps them not only have a healthier lifestyle and improve their coordination, but also teaches them how to better express themselves and grow into the person they are meant to be.

We do have a FREE dance day available at this location! This free day is used as a teacher training day, so classes may be a bit larger than usual. However, it is a great way to see if your child enjoys the class and if it would be a good fit for them. Come check out the new kids dance studio in Miramar on Monday, March 7th by attending a risk-free trial! We will have a great variation of classes available to check out including ballet, hip hop, and tap for all ages. Click HERE to RSVP.

7 Kids Exercise Ideas That Are Fun For the Rest of the Family Too!

Posted by Brittany White on Feb 8, 2016 9:33:29 PM

The holiday feasts and festivities are over, and the time has come to work off all the turkey, treats, and other celebratory noms. But getting kids to workout is a little tricky, as they’re probably not interested in spending time on the elliptical. Not to worry, with these easy kids exercises, your munchkins will be moving and grooving in no time, busting a move, and getting healthy! In the meantime, enjoy the extra belly space for zerberts and tummy tickles.

  1. Walking (Or Running) With the Family Dog
Dogs need walks, kids need exercise, and that’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about when you get home from work. Let the kids take over walking the family pet if it’s safe. This is not recommended if the dog is too large for your child to manage alone, but if you have a little dog, this is the perfect chance to get a daily chore taken care of. This exercise idea for kids also spreads some tasks around the household and teaches kids responsibility.10-21-family-and-pets-best-dog-parks-walking-dogs1.jpg
  2. Dance!
From enrolling in kids dance classes at a local studio, to playing some dance video games on the family TV, to just busting a move while blasting your favorite kid-friendly Pandora station, there’s no excuse to not be dancing at some point in the day. It boosts coordination, self esteem, mood, and is a great form of exercise for kids! With games like Just Dance for Wii and PlayStation, and Dance Central for Xbox, it’s easy to bring the dance party home. Just make sure you have enough space! Dance classes for kids are great for socialization as well. And a great way to start the day? Have a song queued up as an alarm to wake up to, and wake up to your favorite tune! Dance your way out of bed, and you’re bound to have a great day. Try it!

  3. BunnyJacks!
Despite the silly name, this workout is intense! It really works those little legs, and gets the blood flowing! To do a BunnyJack, you can hop around a large space, or perform it while standing in place. One rep is hopping like a bunny twice, and then doing a regular jumping jack. This kids exercise is best performed while wearing bunny ears, and with a snack of baby carrot sticks served immediately after.

  4. Create a Home Obstacle Course
Next time you find yourself at the discount store, head over to the toy aisle and pick up some hula hoops, pool noodles, small plastic cones, and other things to create a course for your little one to work through. Give them fun themes, like pretending you’re secret agents who have to sneak through a busy train station without being noticed. Imagination is the key for this kids exercise!

  5. Hula Hooping!
Hula hooping is making a comeback as a great weight loss/fitness activity, and it’s a super awesome exercise idea for kids. The best way to get the most out of this workout is by making your own hula hoops, which combines fitness and arts and crafts into one activity filled day! To make a hula hoop, pick up some polypropylene tubing from Home Depot, or whichever hardware store is closest to you. You’ll also want to pick up some tube fittings as well. ¾” width is recommended for small bodies. Once you have these two things, it’s up to you if you want to buy tube scissors as well, which run about $18, or just use regular house scissors. Tube scissors make cutting a little easier, but can be pricey.

Next, head over to an art supply shop, and grab some fun colored, skinny duct tape for decorating your hoop! Get a few different colors, like neon, metallic, and a dark color. Last stop, the grocery store. If you don’t mind a little bit of rattle in your hoop, pick up a bag of rice. This also helps to add some weight to your hoop, to keep it spinning longer. WARNING: To avoid hip bruising, hoops should never weigh more than two pounds. For a small child, a quarter of a pound should be plenty. Measure out the rice, use a funnel or a paper cone to get it in the tube, and use the connector to seal it together. Then get started decorating! Once the hoop is finished, have a contest to see who can keep it going for the longest. Or check out some videos on YouTube, and learn some neat hoop tricks!kids-hula-hoop.jpg
  6. Host a Playground Triathlon
Kick as high as you can on the swing 30 times, go up and down the slide 15 times, spin on the Merry-Go-Round until you get dizzy, and bring it home by collapsing in the sandbox in a tired but victorious heap. With multiple kids, you can time them, and make some ribbons in advance for winners. This kids exercise is recommended for the warmer months, as lots of running is involved.

  7. Biking
For those in those wintery climates, this may have to wait a few months, but for those in the sunnier parts of the world, hop to it! Biking trails are becoming more popular, especially in more urban cities, so grab your helmets and get going! Bike to the beach, to school, to the grocery store, or just find a nice trail to bike through and watch the sunset. Biking isn’t just an exercise for kids, it’s great for the whole family! It reduces your carbon footprint, and burns tons of calories!

Hope these exercises for kids make fitness fun for your fam! At Dance to EvOLve, we feel that working out should never feel like a chore. Now go get fit and have some fun!
