Fun Fourth of July Activities for Kids

Posted by Helen McCarthy on Jul 3, 2017 10:02:00 PM

The Fourth of July is fast approaching! This holiday usually brings time spent with family and friends enjoying a classic summer bbq - and of course everything red, white, and blue. Whether you are attending a block party or celebrating at home, we have some great ideas for getting your little ones involved with some fun Independence Day activities for kids!

The most essential part of any party that you plan is the food! There are so many holiday snacks you can make, and the best part is that you can get the kids involved in the preparation. There is always fun to be had decorating cookies or cupcakes with red, white, and blue sprinkles or frosting. Its great to see all the creative designs the little ones come up with, and they have a blast helping you out. Another great summer dish that they can help you prepare is fruit salad. Not only is this a nutritional addition to any BBQ menu, but it is also such a refreshing, quick, and easy entree to prepare. Whether you just choose to prepare a classic fruit salad using your favorite festive fruit or get creative using cookie cutters to cut fruit into cute star shapes it’s sure to be a hit. You can also have the kids help you make a unique dessert by creating kabobs with fruit, brownies, marshmallows - really anything that you want! These are delicious and effortless!

Moving on from the food, another great area of the prep that the little ones love to help out with is the decorating! This can be a tricky task, but don’t feel like you need to go out and buy decorations that you are only going to use for one day when you can make your own to last for years to come! We found a great way to not only create super cute star suncatchers, but also use all those old crayons you have laying around the house. These festive decorations will definitely be a crowd pleaser at any party, and the kids will have a blast making them with you!

We also have so many DYI craft ideas that kids and adults alike can play with while enjoying the food and festivities! Confetti launchers are the perfect at-home alternative to fireworks without all the safety hazards. There is sure to be fun to have with these confetti cannons for all ages. The kids can help out with creating their own unique designs on the outside of the cannons and will love setting off their own fireworks! Another easy craft that everyone can get involved in is the creation and exploration of slime! Not only can you make the slime Fourth of July themed, but it’s a great Independence day activity for kids. And finally, what better way to cool down on a hot summer’s day than to have a water balloon fight?! You can even split into different teams to have Patriots against the British to have your own historical battle.

The last key ingredient to any party is the music! Make sure to have a playlist planned with all your family’s favorite songs to groove to! Your little ones will love busting out some of the moves they have been learning in their Dance To EvOLvE classes or summer camps, and now is the perfect time to share them with the rest of the family!

And of course, the main attraction of any 4th of July festivities is the fireworks show! Don’t forget to plan out the best viewing sight to enjoy a fireworks show! In San Diego there are usually a few shows to be seen from anywhere along the beach or the bay. From watching the annual parades in Coronado or Old Town to enjoying the day at the Del Mar Fair, to spending the day at the beach. There are so many great Fourth of July activities for kids in San Diego. If you live in Chicago make sure to check out all the parades and music festivals they have located throughout the area! So much fun ready to ensue for the entire family with all the events planned - Chicago is definitely prepared with many activities for kids on Independence Day!

We hope you have a great time trying out some of these activities and exploring your city on this fun-filled holiday! Wishing you all the best dance parties and time spent with those you love with these 4th of July activities for kids!

New Children’s Dance Classes in Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Nov 29, 2016 4:53:14 PM

The Windy City has new children’s dance classes available! Here at Dance To EvOLvE, we are proud to announce that we will be holding kids dance classes in Rogers Park beginning January 2017. Additionally, we will also be hosting after school/daycare programs where your children can dance with us!

If you’re on the fence about signing your child up for kid’s dance classes, check out the reasons we encourage even the littlest ones to start dancing! Here, we have put together great information about the benefits of dance at an early age. It introduces kids to a different way of thinking, expands their socialization skills and keeps them physically healthy.

What Dancing Does at a Young Age

While you might think that your children are too young to be taking dance classes, think of all the benefits that dance brings along. Dancing allows children the freedom of expression in a way few other activities can. This can often open up a new perspective of thinking that will carry on with them throughout their lives. Examined Existence, a website that studies the different activities that affect the human body, states that “experts from Stanford University say that dancing is great at involving all the brain functions simultaneously – from musical and kinesthetic, to rational and emotional.” Not only does dance help young individuals feel more confident in expressing themselves and utilizing their mind, but overall young dancers have a major advantage of unlocking their fullest potential. Children’s dance classes help those who want to learn the true art form of expression the opportunity to channel their skill and energy into a positive and grand spectrum. As an added bonus, allowing them to exhaust all their energy in a kid’s dance class instead of home means less clean up work and a happier/healthier child (and parent for that matter)!

The Importance of Arts Within a Community

When it comes to the arts, The Windy City is blowing us away with their new innovative and intricate mindsets.  Whether it be music, drawing or children's dance classes, these mindsets often stem from young individuals that make an impact within the community. Allowing for a community to build means a better future, which is the true purpose of art. In Strengthening Communities Through Dance by Dee Decker, the author states “Many key principles of social interaction including creativity and teamwork are displayed at community dances.  Dancers are allowed to express their creativity in a nonverbal format. [...] Through dance, we are laying the foundation to share in the camaraderie, to be healthier, and to strengthen communities.”

Art allows for individuals to come together to build, create, and discover. Within a community we build relations with one another, we create memories that will last us a lifetime, and we discover ourselves. Be involved in your community by signing your child up for kid’s dance classes and watch the social connections blossom!

How Can I Make Sure My Child Fully Expresses Themselves

Allowing your child to stray from daily routine by putting them in some extracurricular activity that they enjoy is the first step. The second step is to make sure that your child works to their fullest potential, which means balancing work, nutrition, and fun. The third step, which is the most important step, is to guide them throughout the process and in life in general. It’s not enough to just hold their hands or to sign them up for what you see as beneficial, but actually get involved. Parental Rights, a website that delivers information to protect children by empowering parents states, “students with involved parents tend to earn higher grades, have better social skills, and are more likely to graduate and go on to post-secondary education.” So this means that the parent cheering for their child during a basketball game or practicing dance drills with them before a recital is more encouraging than the parent that just lets their child run amuck. Get involved with your children, because to them you're irreplaceable.

Extra Curricular Activities for Kids in Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Aug 10, 2016 11:10:52 AM

Summer is coming to an end soon which means school is on it’s way back into our lives. We all know parents are excited to get back their sanity, but for the kids, the world is coming to an end. Kids tend not to to be excited and to go back to school, but mostly they want to get their mind off it by doing extracurricular activities. Here are some ideas of activities they can do outside of school here in Chicago!

  1. Play ball!

soccer.jpg

Playing a sport can be self-fulfilling for kids. It teaches them how to be a team player, and how to be the best they can be in something they enjoy. They can get involved in school sports clubs or even go out and join teams that are not associated with the school. Maybe they can try something out of their comfort level and try different sports! If they love soccer, great, maybe they could also try tennis too! Usually soccer players can play tennis really well because of their coordination. Extra curricular activities like these are very beneficial for kids who have a lot of energy and for kids who need practice becoming more social. Whether it is basketball, tennis, or any type of sport, this will allow them to have fun while they also stay in shape!

  1. Music Lessons
music.jpg

Music is a great way for your child to be more cultural. Studies show that playing an instrument releases stress and improves your IQ. This leads to higher test scores because learning how to read music and understanding how to use the right side of your brain more makes kids become more intellectual. Piano lessons are the stereotypical instrument to practice as a kid, but they can try the drums, or even a ukulele! Give them an instrument to look forward to playing when they get home!

  1.  Community Service
community_service4.jpg

Getting involved in your community is a wonderful way to for your child to gain self pride knowing that they are doing something good. Whether it is volunteering at the local food and clothes closet, to cleaning up the shores of Lake Michigan, doing something that is noble teaches them how to give back and practice being kind and humble person. This will take their mind off the stresses of school and get them outdoors! They can sign up here to start volunteering! There are many organizations and activities they can do around Chicago!

  1.  Get Them Outside!
outside.jpg

Vitamin D is important for growing kids! They need to run around outside and use their imagination, because a healthy imagination leads to a happier and a more stress free child. Kids are only grow up once, this is their chance to roll around in the dirt and have fun while they are young. Take time out of their day where they are off their electronic devices and get them to go outside and enjoy the nature! Being stuck in a classroom all day for 5 days a week can be overwhelming, let them get some fresh air!

  1.   Get Them Moving and Grooving!
