Back to School Mood Chart

Posted by Dance To EvOLvE Team on Aug 18, 2017 6:17:59 PM

Summer is winding down and it is officially the “back to school season.” This time of year is always a whirlwind of emotions for parents and for kids. So we have created a Back to School Mood Chart so that you can pinpoint what exactly you are feeling and why!

 Source: http://minutes.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Inside-Out-Voices-InsideOut-1024x341.jpg

Sadness

It is a sad moment that summer is ending. Days of camp, free play and warm weather are ending and it is natural to feel a little sad! Also a new school year means that your kids are getting older which sometimes is a little sad as well! It always seems too soon to say goodbye to your little ones, even though they will be your little ones forever no matter how big they get.

Happiness

Summer was wonderful. Full of family time, relaxing days and good memories! Now you are happy to continue on making memories during the new school year! It’s a new chapter in your and your kid’s lives but you are happy to see what good times it brings!

Joy

As summer ends that means finally your kidsare back at school! Finally time to just relax, or do all those little things around the house that you haven’t been able to do because your kids have been home! Or if you are a working parent finally you have a set schedule and do not have to pay for childcare anymore! It’s a joyous occasion! Celebrate!

Dread

Early mornings, packed lunches, shopping trips, homework sessions, and classroom drama (might) lie ahead. There are plenty of things about back to school and school that are not so fun and it is understandable to have a good amount of dread.

Anger

Maybe summer went by in a flash and many of your plans did not pan out and your to-do list is longer than ever. Or maybe the thought of spending a large chunk of change on back to school shopping trips is making your blood boil! There are many completely valid reasons to be angry during this time of the year.

Surprise

Summer is over already? Is it really time to go back to school? Time seems to be moving increasingly faster with every year so it is completely normal to be caught by surprise by September! Wasn’t just yesterday the last day of school?

Anxiety

Will they like their teacher? Will they have friends in their classes? Will they be able to handle the homework and new material? During this time of the year there is a lot of changes and newness in the near future, which can cause worry for both kids and parents. Just always assure yourself that you will make it through. Do not let being worried get the best of you!

Anticipation

With all these changes, it is normal to feel a sense of anticipation. With great new back to school activities, new friends, learning new things, and many more new experiences ahead it is wonderful to feel anticipation about the new school year!

Excitement

Along with the anxiety and worry that these changes can cause they can also cause excitement! A new year is exciting because of all these changes and the chance for wonderful new experiences! Not only at school but new after-school activities as well. This is a great time of year to try new after school activities! For example dance, music, sports, art are great new back to school activities for kids. Dance to EvOLvE is a great back to school activity for San Diego and Chicago kids.

During this time it is important to focus on the positive aspects of the back to school season including the chances to try new things and have a fresh start! New activities such as dance classes are a great part of a new school year so check out our fall class schedules:

Fun Fourth of July Activities for Kids

Posted by Helen McCarthy on Jul 3, 2017 10:02:00 PM

The Fourth of July is fast approaching! This holiday usually brings time spent with family and friends enjoying a classic summer bbq - and of course everything red, white, and blue. Whether you are attending a block party or celebrating at home, we have some great ideas for getting your little ones involved with some fun Independence Day activities for kids!

The most essential part of any party that you plan is the food! There are so many holiday snacks you can make, and the best part is that you can get the kids involved in the preparation. There is always fun to be had decorating cookies or cupcakes with red, white, and blue sprinkles or frosting. Its great to see all the creative designs the little ones come up with, and they have a blast helping you out. Another great summer dish that they can help you prepare is fruit salad. Not only is this a nutritional addition to any BBQ menu, but it is also such a refreshing, quick, and easy entree to prepare. Whether you just choose to prepare a classic fruit salad using your favorite festive fruit or get creative using cookie cutters to cut fruit into cute star shapes it’s sure to be a hit. You can also have the kids help you make a unique dessert by creating kabobs with fruit, brownies, marshmallows - really anything that you want! These are delicious and effortless!

Moving on from the food, another great area of the prep that the little ones love to help out with is the decorating! This can be a tricky task, but don’t feel like you need to go out and buy decorations that you are only going to use for one day when you can make your own to last for years to come! We found a great way to not only create super cute star suncatchers, but also use all those old crayons you have laying around the house. These festive decorations will definitely be a crowd pleaser at any party, and the kids will have a blast making them with you!

We also have so many DYI craft ideas that kids and adults alike can play with while enjoying the food and festivities! Confetti launchers are the perfect at-home alternative to fireworks without all the safety hazards. There is sure to be fun to have with these confetti cannons for all ages. The kids can help out with creating their own unique designs on the outside of the cannons and will love setting off their own fireworks! Another easy craft that everyone can get involved in is the creation and exploration of slime! Not only can you make the slime Fourth of July themed, but it’s a great Independence day activity for kids. And finally, what better way to cool down on a hot summer’s day than to have a water balloon fight?! You can even split into different teams to have Patriots against the British to have your own historical battle.

The last key ingredient to any party is the music! Make sure to have a playlist planned with all your family’s favorite songs to groove to! Your little ones will love busting out some of the moves they have been learning in their Dance To EvOLvE classes or summer camps, and now is the perfect time to share them with the rest of the family!

And of course, the main attraction of any 4th of July festivities is the fireworks show! Don’t forget to plan out the best viewing sight to enjoy a fireworks show! In San Diego there are usually a few shows to be seen from anywhere along the beach or the bay. From watching the annual parades in Coronado or Old Town to enjoying the day at the Del Mar Fair, to spending the day at the beach. There are so many great Fourth of July activities for kids in San Diego. If you live in Chicago make sure to check out all the parades and music festivals they have located throughout the area! So much fun ready to ensue for the entire family with all the events planned - Chicago is definitely prepared with many activities for kids on Independence Day!

We hope you have a great time trying out some of these activities and exploring your city on this fun-filled holiday! Wishing you all the best dance parties and time spent with those you love with these 4th of July activities for kids!

Hip Hop Camps for Boys & Girls this Summer

Posted by Helen McCarthy on Jun 9, 2017 4:59:34 PM

Hip hop is a style that has been rapidly growing in popularity, and now competes with the leading dance styles. But what is hip hop? After learning a little about the rich history of this unique dance form, you might see the large impact that this piece of the the dance world has! Who knows, you might even think about enrolling you child in one of Dance to EvOLvE’s awesome Hip Hop Summer Camps in San Diego and Chicago!

This relatively new American dance style debuted in the late 1960’s with the advent of hip hop music. The craze spread in the 70’s with the rise of professional street crews, who were not conventionally trained dancers. Complex rhythms of hip hop music combined with the down-to-earth style of traditional African dancing inspired the creation of many disdinct genres of the dance style, with the most prominent being breaking, locking, and popping. While all these techniques are different, they share their roots in street dancing and the improv style.

Interestingly enough, hip hop styles evolved differently on the different coasts. The East Coast is said to be the real start start of hip hop, and best known for the style of breaking. In contrast, the West was later to adopt the style and better known for artists being more robotic with their movements. Something that both of these coasts had in common was the formal and informal competitions that kept this style of dance unique and thriving in the 1980’s. At these competitions dancers pushed themselves to their creative limit to show off their own personalized technique and tricks.

In the next decade hip hop started to break into the mainstream fad dances. Moves such as the running man, the worm, and the cabbage patch were very popular in the 90’s and coincided with revamped hip hop music culture. People who were not “hip hop dancers” started to learn these moves, and in doing so, propelled the status of the dance further into popular culture.

Moving into the 21st century, the hip hop style remains in the forefront of the dance scene. As the style continues to evolve dancers are constantly upping the ante as hip hop has become a mainstay in popular culture. It has come a long way from its beginnings as a street style, as it is now practiced on stage and taught in many dance schools. Hip hop is a popular style of choice for performances and music videos for recording artists, and it is not hard to see why. Unlike some other more traditionally structured styles, hip hop allows dancers endless opportunities to explore fast paced, fun moves movement in his or her unique way.

kids hip hop dance classes copy.jpg

Now, after learning about the rich history of this unique dance style are you thinking that hip hop classes for boys and girls are something that your dancer might like? You’re in luck! At Dance to EvOLvE we love offering hip hop classes to our young dancers. And, we are even more excited to devote an entire week to the popular style this summer - the perfect way for your dancer to experience a taste of this awesome style! Our hip hop summer camps in San Diego and Chicago are loaded with fun games and activities in addition to, of course, our awesome dance classes! These are great for boys and girls of all ages, though enrollment does vary depending on which location you choose to attend. We can’t wait to share this dance style that has so much rich history to offer, and to see all the new moves that your dancer invents over the course of the week!

If you are new to the style of hip hop and not sure how to prepare you little one for a hip hop camp in San Diego or Chicago have no fear - it’s easy! Just make sure your dancer wears appropriate shoes (sneakers are great) and comfortable clothes (sweats and t-shirts are perfect!). All this and a healthy lunch and your dancer is ready for loads of high energy fun!

Already enrolled in another Dance to EvOLvE summer camp? Great! When you sign up for camps at different locations you get a 15% discount with the second camp!

Summer Dance Class Themes with Dance to EvOLvE

Posted by Helen McCarthy on May 27, 2017 8:14:01 PM

Summer is fast approaching - crazy right!? With the kids home all day without school you are going to want activities that keep them active, involved, and social. Luckily, at Dance To EvOLvE we have been hard at work planning themed weeks to keep our our current kids dance classes fun and fresh this summer!

FullSizeRender 2 copy.jpg

What better way to kickstart the summer than to dance outside? The summer themes begin with Dance Outside Week, where dancers get to enjoy the beautiful weather that comes with the new season (or lack thereof at our San Diego locations). Teachers often choose to spend the games portion of class outside, or even teach their entire class in the fresh air! These activities will be in safe, shady areas, but be sure that your dancers bring plenty of water on this day so that they stay hydrated!

The fun outdoors doesn't end there – get ready for anything and everything bubbles on Bubble Day! Teachers might add an under the sea mermaid twist to the theme or opt for a more whimsical take on the idea. During game time dancers will have an opportunity to venture outdoors to play with all types of bubbles. From large bubbles they can chase with friends to small bubble wands they can twirl around with, your little one will have many opportunities to find creative ways to incorporate bubbles into movement and dance.

DSC_0397-2-1.jpg

During Beach Week we bring the tropical mindset to the studio! Our San Diego students are already familiar with the sandy beaches by the ocean, so this is a fun way to incorperate their favorite summertime activities into dance class. Dancers at our Chicago locations will get to travel to more coastal shores without hopping on a plane. On beach days dancers get to dress in their favorite beach-going attire – a super fun way to switch up their normal dance class routine. Beach themed games will be set up during the allotted game time. Sure to be a blast!

Families, you will get a chance to put on your dancing shoes and learn a few steps from your young dancer during Parents Get Involved Day! This class is all about being a part of the Dance To EvOLvE family, so you definitely do not want to miss out. You can look forward to some partner dancing with your little one, and they will love to show you what they have been learning in class. Older dancers will also have the opportunity to teach their families some new moves they learned – a super fun activity for all participants that is guaranteed to improve dance parties at home.

IMG_5448.jpg

Switch Up The Style Day is a great way to expose our students to different dance styles that they might not have learned before! For example, classes during this week could potentially incorporate some hip-hop moves into a ballet/tap class. Teachers might choose to change up small sections of the routines throughout the class or simply change the entire class to a different style. The possibilities are endless with this theme, and we can’t wait to see the unique ideas our teachers come up with!

The Dance to EvOLvE team is excited to experience the creativity and laughter that our themed summer classes bring – from enjoying the great outdoors, to fun with costumes and bubbles, to seeing YOU bust some moves on the dance floor! Be sure to keep your eye of for these special classes on the announcement page so that your dancer is a part of the fun!

If you are looking for other ways to keep your little one active this summer, look no further than our Dance To EvOLvE summer camps! We are hosting a wide range of themes and locations this summer that are a perfect way to creatively focus their energy, keep their minds active, and build friendships outside of school. Go check them out!

New Children’s Dance Classes in Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Nov 29, 2016 4:53:14 PM

The Windy City has new children’s dance classes available! Here at Dance To EvOLvE, we are proud to announce that we will be holding kids dance classes in Rogers Park beginning January 2017. Additionally, we will also be hosting after school/daycare programs where your children can dance with us!

If you’re on the fence about signing your child up for kid’s dance classes, check out the reasons we encourage even the littlest ones to start dancing! Here, we have put together great information about the benefits of dance at an early age. It introduces kids to a different way of thinking, expands their socialization skills and keeps them physically healthy.

DTEchildballerina.jpg

What Dancing Does at a Young Age

While you might think that your children are too young to be taking dance classes, think of all the benefits that dance brings along. Dancing allows children the freedom of expression in a way few other activities can. This can often open up a new perspective of thinking that will carry on with them throughout their lives. Examined Existence, a website that studies the different activities that affect the human body, states that “experts from Stanford University say that dancing is great at involving all the brain functions simultaneously – from musical and kinesthetic, to rational and emotional.” Not only does dance help young individuals feel more confident in expressing themselves and utilizing their mind, but overall young dancers have a major advantage of unlocking their fullest potential. Children’s dance classes help those who want to learn the true art form of expression the opportunity to channel their skill and energy into a positive and grand spectrum. As an added bonus, allowing them to exhaust all their energy in a kid’s dance class instead of home means less clean up work and a happier/healthier child (and parent for that matter)!

ballet_dance_classes_for_kid.jpg

The Importance of Arts Within a Community

When it comes to the arts, The Windy City is blowing us away with their new innovative and intricate mindsets.  Whether it be music, drawing or children's dance classes, these mindsets often stem from young individuals that make an impact within the community. Allowing for a community to build means a better future, which is the true purpose of art. In Strengthening Communities Through Dance by Dee Decker, the author states “Many key principles of social interaction including creativity and teamwork are displayed at community dances.  Dancers are allowed to express their creativity in a nonverbal format. [...] Through dance, we are laying the foundation to share in the camaraderie, to be healthier, and to strengthen communities.”

Art allows for individuals to come together to build, create, and discover. Within a community we build relations with one another, we create memories that will last us a lifetime, and we discover ourselves. Be involved in your community by signing your child up for kid’s dance classes and watch the social connections blossom!

How Can I Make Sure My Child Fully Expresses Themselves

Allowing your child to stray from daily routine by putting them in some extracurricular activity that they enjoy is the first step. The second step is to make sure that your child works to their fullest potential, which means balancing work, nutrition, and fun. The third step, which is the most important step, is to guide them throughout the process and in life in general. It’s not enough to just hold their hands or to sign them up for what you see as beneficial, but actually get involved. Parental Rights, a website that delivers information to protect children by empowering parents states, “students with involved parents tend to earn higher grades, have better social skills, and are more likely to graduate and go on to post-secondary education.” So this means that the parent cheering for their child during a basketball game or practicing dance drills with them before a recital is more encouraging than the parent that just lets their child run amuck. Get involved with your children, because to them you're irreplaceable.

Extra Curricular Activities for Kids in Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Aug 10, 2016 11:10:52 AM

Summer is coming to an end soon which means school is on it’s way back into our lives. We all know parents are excited to get back their sanity, but for the kids, the world is coming to an end. Kids tend not to to be excited and to go back to school, but mostly they want to get their mind off it by doing extracurricular activities. Here are some ideas of activities they can do outside of school here in Chicago!

  1. Play ball!

soccer.jpg

Playing a sport can be self-fulfilling for kids. It teaches them how to be a team player, and how to be the best they can be in something they enjoy. They can get involved in school sports clubs or even go out and join teams that are not associated with the school. Maybe they can try something out of their comfort level and try different sports! If they love soccer, great, maybe they could also try tennis too! Usually soccer players can play tennis really well because of their coordination. Extra curricular activities like these are very beneficial for kids who have a lot of energy and for kids who need practice becoming more social. Whether it is basketball, tennis, or any type of sport, this will allow them to have fun while they also stay in shape!

  1. Music Lessons
music.jpg

Music is a great way for your child to be more cultural. Studies show that playing an instrument releases stress and improves your IQ. This leads to higher test scores because learning how to read music and understanding how to use the right side of your brain more makes kids become more intellectual. Piano lessons are the stereotypical instrument to practice as a kid, but they can try the drums, or even a ukulele! Give them an instrument to look forward to playing when they get home!

  1.  Community Service
community_service4.jpg

Getting involved in your community is a wonderful way to for your child to gain self pride knowing that they are doing something good. Whether it is volunteering at the local food and clothes closet, to cleaning up the shores of Lake Michigan, doing something that is noble teaches them how to give back and practice being kind and humble person. This will take their mind off the stresses of school and get them outdoors! They can sign up here to start volunteering! There are many organizations and activities they can do around Chicago!

  1.  Get Them Outside!
outside.jpg

Vitamin D is important for growing kids! They need to run around outside and use their imagination, because a healthy imagination leads to a happier and a more stress free child. Kids are only grow up once, this is their chance to roll around in the dirt and have fun while they are young. Take time out of their day where they are off their electronic devices and get them to go outside and enjoy the nature! Being stuck in a classroom all day for 5 days a week can be overwhelming, let them get some fresh air!

  1.   Get Them Moving and Grooving!
IMG_0361.jpg

Evanston is a special and diverse city in Chicago with its historic neighborhood, bustling downtown
and Lake Michigan. Along with these attractions, our kids dance classes in Evanston are located at the center of the city, which is accessible and close to everything in Evanston. A 10-minute drive will take you to the Evanston Farmers Markets in Ecology Center, which is a great place for your family to have some fresh, affordable and locally grown food after the little dancer’s morning dance classes. Similarly close to our dance class is Evanston Public Library. If you want to boost your children’s learning potential and would like your kids to be exposed to the merits of reading, this is definitely the place to take them after classes. It offers special programs and story hours for preschool age children at least 20 months old. If you are up for a longer drive, Up to 30 minutes, the Chicago Children's Theater is a great option. The fun and inspiration that it passes to little dancers is worth the visit. This theater, geared towards kids as the name suggests, is devoted not only to delivering visually stunning children’s shows but to educational programs for young performers as well. It is a good opportunity to show your kids where they can apply the dance techniques they learn in class in Evanston.

2. 4S Ranch/Rancho Bernardo:

Kids dance class in 4S Ranch4S Ranch and Rancho Bernardo are lively communities with endless opportunities for sports with so many public parks and playgrounds, and active youth sport community organizations. We hold our kids dance class in 4S Ranch at Kid Ventures, the neighborhood play center with creative play facilities aiming to help nurture your child’s imagination and creativity. Here your children can play different roles and explore different skills in various scenarios in its play village such as theater, nursery, pirate ship, etc. When your kids are done with dance class in 4S Ranch, just take them out of the classroom and Kid Ventures is right there. Warning: the kids may have so much fun they won't want to leave when it’s time to go home! Another great spot in 4S Ranch for family activities is the 4S Heritage Park. It has two play structures, one of which is designed for smaller children and a basketball court for Dads and their friends. There is also large grassy field for all types of sports where your dancers can practice some new dance moves they just learned in class. Only 3 minutes away from our 4S Ranch kids dance studio, this public park is perfect for a family gathering, a walk with the dog, or a casual stroll. while waiting for your kids taking their dance classes.

3. Fremont:

Our new dance classes in Seattle is located at Fremont Health Club. Fremont, isKids Dance Class Frement known for its unique, quirky and artistic atmosphere. For families who would like to try biking with your little ones after their dance classes, head to Gilman Bike Trail. There are a couple of places to rent bikes that are designed to carry little bikers at the back and offer helmets for kids as well. It’s all relatively flat so it’s good for kids or parents pulling a trailer. Gas Works Park is the public park near our dance school where you can go right after class for family activities. It is an ideal spot in Fremont for kite flying with kids, watching the sun set across the lake and just chilling out after the children have spent all their energy during dance classes.

We all do our best to encourage family bonding time with our kids rather than plugging them in to the TV, smart phones or iPad (however tempting that might be). It is such a wonderful bonus to be able to have that enriching time with the kids in such a convenient location to their dance classes. Dance classes in Evanston, 4S Ranch and Fremont are surrounded by many amazing family friendly attractions as listed above. Check them out after picking up your kids from dance classes and enjoy the family fun!

Toddler Dance Classes in Chicago!

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Aug 13, 2014 9:22:00 AM

Dancing is all the rage these days.  All you have to do is turn on the TV and you will find some variation of "So You Think You Can Dance With the Stars?"  People are flocking to dance studios to learn how to shake it like the pros, but despite the popularity of dance it can still be challenging to find proper toddler dance classes in Chicago.  Location is everything! What fun is a kids dance class if it is too difficult or too far to get to? It’s also important to take into consideration commute time on different times of the day. Crossing Chicago at rush hour?  No thank you!  With location being so important, EvOLvE has made it a mission to provide convenient kids dance studios in fun, accessible areas. Read on to find out more about our up and coming dance locations.

Watching a baseball game with your child can prove to be an amazing, fun experience. If baseball isn’t your thing, check out Welles Park which has a fully enclosed, shaded playground and a spray water feature, perfect for hot summer days. With all the dancing, splashing, and baseball, your toddler is sure to have a blast in this exciting location.

Edgewater local dance classes

Similar to other locations, our Edgewater local dance classes are tap, ballet and hip hop.  This kid friendly area features parks on every other corner as well as an array of movie theaters and restaurants. In addition to this is a park facility called Broadway Armory that offers tons of fun activities for children such as soccer, volleyball and gymnastics.

Uptown & Old Irving Park local dance classes

Our next two studios are in Uptown and the Northwest side of Chicago. These areas offer lotstoddler ballet class chicago of fun parks, restaurants and kid friendly activities for your toddler. Kids dance classes in Uptown and Old Irving Park include creative movement classes, tap and ballet combo classes and hip hop classes for ages 2 to 12. Evanston local dance classes

Our upcoming location in January of 2015 will be located in Evanston. This location has it all from malls, parks, theaters and lots of fun places to eat. Starting in November, an indoor kids center called Little Beans Café will be opening that will have something for everyone including our Evanston local dance classes. This family friendly suburb is close to the city and a perfect place to get up on your feet.

Once you have decided on the best area for your toddler dance lessons in San Diego, you can begin to look at what studios in your preferred area offer; what the teachers teach, background on the studio and age appropriateness of the skills taught. A good kids dance studio will love children, but more importantly know how to speak to and motivate them.  Teaching children is much different than teach adults, and teaching toddlers is much different than teaching 8 year olds, as many of us know from first hand experience!  When you do a trial class, ask yourself: was the music appropriate for the age group? Were the skills challenging, yet achievable? Was the teacher patient?  Was the facility clean and safe?  Last, but not least, ask your child if he or she had fun!  Did your toddler experience lots of laughs and smiles in class? The right dance studio should have the perfect combination of learning and laughter to fully benefit your toddler.
