Every City Needs a Dance Company

Posted by Brittany White on Nov 18, 2017 5:24:32 PM

For most cities, it is industry that brings people into the area and creates the city for a general purpose. However, it is the arts that stimulate the city to become a living, breathing community where people want to visit and be a part of. Sure there are those who can try to argue against this, but honestly who travels to France and doesn’t visit the Louvre? Or who could leave Florence without having waited at least two hours in line to stare longingly at Michelangelo’s David? Even if you were able to leave these cities without witnessing these masterpieces, the streets in France and Florence are both overflowing with live music and vibrant color that by just walking around along the cobblestones you are swept up into the artwork of the city.

Unfortunately, at some point in our society, the collective opinion has allowed art to only be deemed necessary in large, “upscale” cities. This attitude is especially prevalent when we look at the support of professional dance companies in smaller cities verses cities like New York City. Rather then focusing on a city negatively affected by this lack of artistic support, we want to keep things positive and instead look at a city where they are helping to rebuild a dance company and the benefits the community has experienced from the company’s presence.

Cleveland, OH the city of “rock and roll” is also our amped-up city that has recently revitalized the Cleveland Ballet in 2014. To put things into perspective, Cleveland has a population of 385,809 in comparison to New York City with a population of over 8.538 million! Luckily, the city of Cleveland has not allowed numbers to deter them in their quest for advocating the arts. And what better organization to support than a dance company whose mission is to present “world class dance on stage through classical and new works and to ensure that classical and neoclassical ballet is accessible and relevant to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.” Since the dance company’s revitalization, Cleveland has gained an expanded cultural richness and, of course, seen a rise in a number of cute little ballerinas in tutus. Which, if we are being honest, is one of the best adorable perks of attending any ballet performance.

There are several examples of how having a dance company in Cleveland has helped the city’s culture. Perhaps the best example is the positive exposure children get from seeing the Cleveland Ballet. The Cleveland Ballet is an especially good example since they regularly participate in outreach activities, and work with schools and other non-profits to expose children from all socioeconomic backgrounds to the arts. Having a professional company also increases Cleveland's support of bringing dance into the community through outreach and community funded events.

The city also moves towards creating more kids dance classes in Cleveland from the Cleveland Ballet’s presence. Besides gaining the professional dance school associated with the ballet company, the city sees an increase in other dance schools both professional and recreational in the area! A huge component in a child’s involvement in dance is getting the child to and from dance class each week. This job normally goes to our lifetime and forever loved personal chauffeurs, our parents. A parent who attends a professional performance of the Nutcracker or Swan Lake witnesses the beauty, hard work and dedication dance requires first hand. From viewing a Cleveland Ballet performance a parent is able to gain a deeper appreciation for the art and become more willing to enroll their child in a kids dance class in Cleveland.

The benefits from enrolling children in a dance class are endless! From building self-esteem to challenging a child’s focus and mind, dance class is a great way to spark creativity in young ones. Kids dance classes also helps kids learn valuable life lessons like that improvement comes with commitment and in order to see results they need to put in the work.  Even a child who simply participates in a recreational dance class in Cleveland will gain the confidence and joy that only a dance class can offer.

In the end, it is the benefits children receive from both being exposed to dance and participating in it themselves through kids dance classes that becomes the ultimate reason for having a professional dance company in every city. Yes, the dance company will bring culture and nightlife to the city, but most importantly it will inspire children to become creative and help them develop an appreciation for the arts thus sustaining art for generations to come.

Hip Hop Camps for Boys & Girls this Summer

Posted by Helen McCarthy on Jun 9, 2017 4:59:34 PM

Hip hop is a style that has been rapidly growing in popularity, and now competes with the leading dance styles. But what is hip hop? After learning a little about the rich history of this unique dance form, you might see the large impact that this piece of the the dance world has! Who knows, you might even think about enrolling you child in one of Dance to EvOLvE’s awesome Hip Hop Summer Camps in San Diego and Chicago!

This relatively new American dance style debuted in the late 1960’s with the advent of hip hop music. The craze spread in the 70’s with the rise of professional street crews, who were not conventionally trained dancers. Complex rhythms of hip hop music combined with the down-to-earth style of traditional African dancing inspired the creation of many disdinct genres of the dance style, with the most prominent being breaking, locking, and popping. While all these techniques are different, they share their roots in street dancing and the improv style.

Interestingly enough, hip hop styles evolved differently on the different coasts. The East Coast is said to be the real start start of hip hop, and best known for the style of breaking. In contrast, the West was later to adopt the style and better known for artists being more robotic with their movements. Something that both of these coasts had in common was the formal and informal competitions that kept this style of dance unique and thriving in the 1980’s. At these competitions dancers pushed themselves to their creative limit to show off their own personalized technique and tricks.

In the next decade hip hop started to break into the mainstream fad dances. Moves such as the running man, the worm, and the cabbage patch were very popular in the 90’s and coincided with revamped hip hop music culture. People who were not “hip hop dancers” started to learn these moves, and in doing so, propelled the status of the dance further into popular culture.

Moving into the 21st century, the hip hop style remains in the forefront of the dance scene. As the style continues to evolve dancers are constantly upping the ante as hip hop has become a mainstay in popular culture. It has come a long way from its beginnings as a street style, as it is now practiced on stage and taught in many dance schools. Hip hop is a popular style of choice for performances and music videos for recording artists, and it is not hard to see why. Unlike some other more traditionally structured styles, hip hop allows dancers endless opportunities to explore fast paced, fun moves movement in his or her unique way.

8 New Years Resolutions for the Whole Family!

Posted by Brittany White on Jan 20, 2016 11:09:17 AM

We rang in 2016 with celebrations and declarations of “new year, new me!”, deciding to finally drop that ten pounds, or go after that job of our dreams, or do more volunteer work. But in this time of self improvement, there’s an opportunity to teach valuable life lessons to our children as well. Our little ones are always growing, and learning methods of self improvement now will be beneficial to them later on in life. Here are some suggestions of how you can help your kids EvOLvE in the new year.

1.) Reduce screen time.

Yes, in the digital age, it’s getting harder and harder to not be looking at a screen every hour of the day. With jobs, it’s even harder for a lot of us. But for kids, especially, it’s important to set time aside for off screen activity. For one hour a day, reading a book, playing outside, doing some arts and crafts, sand or water play, or cooking a meal with family, is a great way to disconnect from the web. Not to mention, this is a great time for you to get some away-from-keyboard time as well. You may also consider having your kids "earn" their screen time by reading books or doing chores. This method teaches kids that screen time is a privilege, not a right, and can incentivize preferred behaviors (like cleaning their room or reading to their little sibling). Go play!

2.) Eliminate wrappers.

Kids like snacks. Especially the kind that come in shiny, colorful packaging. But most of those snacks come loaded with sugar, fat, and lots of empty carbohydrates. For 2016, get kids eating healthy snacks that come in edible wrappers. No, we don’t mean these, (although, they are pretty cool). We mean fruit. Bananas are great on the go, with zero mess. They can get bruised and black, but consider getting a banana keeper. They protect the fruit so it will remain “kid approved” all day. Or, try a peanut butter banana quesadilla! You can add spices like cinnamon, ginger, or cardamom to give this classic a flavorful twist. For those who like the sweeter things in life, add honey!  Apples also offer great portability, and there’s an apple to suit nearly every taste profile! Well, except salty, but sliced apples dipped in salted caramel are a match made in heaven. This healthy snack drawer is genius! Kids are increasingly busy with day to day activities, so let’s make healthy eating a breeze!

3.) Establish happy mental health habits.

Your kids work hard. In school to keep up good grades, at home to help out around the house, in extracurricular activities, and some of our older ones are even balancing part time jobs, college applications, and relationships on top of it all. But every now and then, everybody gets stressed. Even our kids, who like to feel invincible. It’s important to teach younger and older children alike that stress is alright as long as you find healthy ways to alleviate it. Teaching children to recognize their personal reactions to stress is a key part of establishing emotional resilience in young people. Coaching kids on how to manage their stress, create methods of tackling large to do lists, and never be afraid to ask for help when needed is how we get healthy, emotionally stable, and happy children.

Puppy-sleep-routine-810x566.jpg

4.) Reinforce healthy sleep habits.

You think they’ve gone to bed hours ago, but when you walk past their bedroom door,  you see it: a little blue glow peeking out from beneath the blankets. It’s 11:00PM, and you can practically already hear the meltdown you are in store for if these little monkeys don’t get some sleep, STAT! The best way to combat after-hours web surfing is to leave all electronic devices in the living room, or another place away from sleeping areas. Make bedrooms a phone free zone, and keep chargers in community areas. Keep lots of reading material, or small notebooks around, for some wind-down activities before it’s time to sleep. Looking at a screen too close to bedtime leads to less restful sleep, while reading before bed reduces insomnia.

5.) Teach accountability.

We hear it all the time from our kids, “but he started it!” It’s time we start asking “what did you do to end it?”  Pointing the finger is a tough habit to break. But if we start teaching children how to  take responsibility for their actions, and that they have no control over what anyone else does, only         how they react to it, it’s a lesson they will take with them all through adulthood.

6.) Teach bravery.

Many things in a kids life takes courage. Trying out for the school play or sports team, making friends in a new school, taking on new responsibilities around the house, or asking for new privileges. In doing all of these things, they are bound to fail at some point. As hard as it is as a parent to watch your kids struggle, it is important to remember that they’re not going to die, and the world is not going to come crashing down. They may feel hurt for a little while, and that’s justified. But teaching our little ones to bounce back from the “no”, will make rejection a tool for success later in life.

kindness-heart-image-orgspring.png

 7.) Teach kindness.

Just like it takes more muscles to frown than to smile, it takes much more energy to be mean than to be nice. From complimenting someone’s outfit, or piece of work they produce, to holding the door for someone, or helping someone with a heavy box, or even just smiling at someone, being nice is easy. A wise person once said, “You can tell a lot about a person's character by how they treat someone who can provide nothing for them”. When kids learn to be nice to everyone, not just those they want to be liked by, it builds great character, and will most likely lead to your kid being pretty popular anyway. Win-win!

8.) Teach the importance of taking care of your body.

While health and wellness comes in all shapes ans sizes, physical fitness is  always important to maintain health of mind and body and manage stress. Encourage your little one to join a sport at school, or take up a physical hobby, like rollerblading, mountain biking, gymnastics or dance! Dance is fantastic way to improve coordination, memory, and self confidence. Get your little ones moving in 2016, with our toddler dance classes, and dance classes for kids aged 4-12!
