Extra Curricular Activities for Kids in Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Aug 10, 2016 11:10:52 AM

Summer is coming to an end soon which means school is on it’s way back into our lives. We all know parents are excited to get back their sanity, but for the kids, the world is coming to an end. Kids tend not to to be excited and to go back to school, but mostly they want to get their mind off it by doing extracurricular activities. Here are some ideas of activities they can do outside of school here in Chicago!

  1. Play ball!

soccer.jpg

Playing a sport can be self-fulfilling for kids. It teaches them how to be a team player, and how to be the best they can be in something they enjoy. They can get involved in school sports clubs or even go out and join teams that are not associated with the school. Maybe they can try something out of their comfort level and try different sports! If they love soccer, great, maybe they could also try tennis too! Usually soccer players can play tennis really well because of their coordination. Extra curricular activities like these are very beneficial for kids who have a lot of energy and for kids who need practice becoming more social. Whether it is basketball, tennis, or any type of sport, this will allow them to have fun while they also stay in shape!

  1. Music Lessons
music.jpg

Music is a great way for your child to be more cultural. Studies show that playing an instrument releases stress and improves your IQ. This leads to higher test scores because learning how to read music and understanding how to use the right side of your brain more makes kids become more intellectual. Piano lessons are the stereotypical instrument to practice as a kid, but they can try the drums, or even a ukulele! Give them an instrument to look forward to playing when they get home!

  1.  Community Service
community_service4.jpg

Getting involved in your community is a wonderful way to for your child to gain self pride knowing that they are doing something good. Whether it is volunteering at the local food and clothes closet, to cleaning up the shores of Lake Michigan, doing something that is noble teaches them how to give back and practice being kind and humble person. This will take their mind off the stresses of school and get them outdoors! They can sign up here to start volunteering! There are many organizations and activities they can do around Chicago!

  1.  Get Them Outside!
outside.jpg

Vitamin D is important for growing kids! They need to run around outside and use their imagination, because a healthy imagination leads to a happier and a more stress free child. Kids are only grow up once, this is their chance to roll around in the dirt and have fun while they are young. Take time out of their day where they are off their electronic devices and get them to go outside and enjoy the nature! Being stuck in a classroom all day for 5 days a week can be overwhelming, let them get some fresh air!

  1.   Get Them Moving and Grooving!

3 Reasons Homeschool Students Should Take Ballet

Posted by Brittany White on Dec 14, 2015 11:00:50 AM

Ballet is a great extracurricular activity for homeschooled students. Due to their flexible schedules, these students have the special opportunity to participate in ballet class any time of the day. Homeschooling also presents its own unique set of challenges, which is often reflected in a child’s behavior and performance. Consider three ways your child can benefit from taking ballet class while in homeschool.

1. Structure

Kids_ballet_class.jpgHomeschooling is a great option for highly motivated students. However, if there is little to no structure in the home, it can have a negative impact on a child’s ability to focus and stay on task. Ballet class can provide the much needed discipline and structure that might otherwise be lacking in the home. Ballet students are taught to show respect for authority, demonstrate proper etiquette in the classroom, and learn responsibility. Being on someone else’s schedule also teaches a homeschooled student time management, a skill that not only helps them with their academics, but even prepares them for the workforce. Check your local dance schools, studios, and recreation centers for midday classes; some of these have created classes specifically with the homeschooler in mind.

2. Socialization

Some homeschooled students have the tendency to be shy or withdrawn; others are hungry for interaction. Ballet class gives homeschooled students the opportunity to socialize with others their age, giving them a sense of community. Many students have forged lifelong friendships based on their mutual love for dance. Through fun, interactiveactivities, ballet students learn to cooperate with others, creating a positive and supportive dynamic in the classroom. Whether a student is learning to be more assertive, or learning how to play well with others, this environment helps homeschooled students develop better social skills in, and outside the classroom.

ballet1.jpg

3. Skill

Every child, homeschooled or not, needs exercise. Ballet class is especially great for homeschool students because it fulfills physical education requirements and gives them a chance to blow off some energy. Contrary to popular belief among many young ones, ballet, however, is not about prancing around in a tutu. Ballet is beautiful, but it’s also very challenging. Ballet technique gives students a full-body workout, enhancing their motor skills, and improving their balance and coordination. Homeschooled students have a particular advantage since they can usually devote more time to practice. When they diligently apply themselves, homeschooled students have the opportunity to accelerate and improve, which in turn, increases their self-confidence.

Ballet, as well as other dance forms, has many physical, mental, and emotional benefits for homeschooled students. It instills principles that help them become better students, children, and members of the community. If you’re considering putting your homeschooler in an extracurricular activity, never underestimate the power of dance.

Local Kids Dance Classes

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Aug 29, 2014 11:06:00 AM

Finding age appropriate local kids dance classes can prove to be difficult at times. You want your kid to be challenged in their dance class but not so much so that they feel overwhelmed. Luckily, Dance to EvOLvE has locations in San Diego, Chicago, and Seattle where we offer a wide variety of kids dance classes. If you are in another area, we are here to provide some helpful tips when looking for an age appropriate local kids dance class.

What Dance Classes Are Offered?

kids dance classWhen looking for a local kids dance class, check out the current dance classes offered.  Are there enough classes for a variety of ages?  Do the dance classes accommodate to the appropriate ages? It is important that the local dance studio offers kids dance classes for specific, target age groups such as 3-4 or 8-11 so that the kids are challenged as well as fully benefit from the others around them. You wouldn’t want you’re 10 year old doing the same activities that the 4 year olds are doing!

Next, you want to look at what types of dance are offered at your local dance studio. Are only creative movement classes offered? What about hip hop classes for kids? It is very important to find the right local kids dance class as it will allow them to grow and succeed. Popular dance classes for kids are hip-hop classes, ballet classes and or combination classes that include a mixture of tap and ballet.

What is your kid interested in?

2016-04-05-1459885800-5466357-dance-thumb.jpgOne of the most important things you can do is ask your kid what they are interested in! If they say hip-hop classes, take a look at local dance studios that offer kids dance classes in that style of dance. Once you have that narrowed down, then you can look at the professionalism of the studio, the cleanliness and the philosophy.  Does the studio place a high emphasis on ensuring the kids feel welcome? What about laughs and smiles? An age appropriate local kids dance class will have the perfect balance of fun, learning and challenge.

Are The Music & Moves Age Appropriate?

Another important factor to look into when finding an age appropriate dance class for kids is the dance moves and the dance music. Not only do the dance moves need to be appropriate but they should also be catered towards the age of your child. For a younger kid, advanced ballet technique should not be introduced just yet. Rather the dance class should be focused on introducing the style of dance as well as learning very basic introductory moves. The dance music also needs to be catered towards the age of the kid. An eight year old in a ballet dance class should be dancing to different music than a five year old in a hip-hop dance class. To ensure the music and dance moves are appropriate, take a trial class at a local dance studio or try a few different ones before settling. There is nothing wrong than taking the time to find the perfect kids dance class for your superstar.

local kids dance classAn age appropriate kids dance class makes all the difference. This age is crucial for your kid to grow, learn and try new things. According to factsforlifeglobal.org, children as young as five years old should be able to move in a coordinated way as well as interact and play with those around them. Dance to EvOLvE wants your child to reach their full potential as well as succeed. A great way to do that is to find a fun, exciting and age appropriate local kids dance class. Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Aug 11, 2014 2:22:00 PM

Dancing is everywhere. On the streets, in the kitchen, on the T.V., with so much dancing around us, it can still be hard to find proper kids dance classes in Seattle.  Location is everything!  What fun is a dance class if it is too difficult or too far to get to? It’s also important to take into consideration commute time on different times of the day. With location being so important, Dance to EvOLvE has made it a mission to provide convenient studios in fun, accessible areas.  Read on to find out more about our up and coming dance locations.

preschooler ballet class seattleNorthgate local dance classes

Northgate local dance classes are hip hop and combination tap/ballet.  These are specially designed toddler dance classes that we have scheduled at easily accessible times. Our Northgate kids dance studio is conveniently located behind the Northgate Mall. Drop your child off at their dance class and take some time for yourself or take your superstar for a bite to eat after they rocked their first lesson. We ensure that our toddler dance classes are in locations that are not only easy to get to but are safe and kid friendly for your child.

University Heights local dance classes

The University Heights community center notkids dance class studio seattle only offers kids dance classes in Seattle, but a whole calendar of events ranging from monthly picnics, to painting classes and art camps for your toddler. Take a kids dance class one week and an art camp the next week to keep your child busy, engaged and active throughout these summer months as well as throughout the year.  Similar to Northgate, University Heights local dance classes are tap, ballet and hip-hop. Take advantage of all these fun activities and we hope to see you and your toddler in the dance studio soon!

Mercer Island local dance classes

With beach living everywhere you look, Mercer Island is a great location for some fun kids dance classes and activities.  Nothing is better in a child's mind than dancing your heart out in the studio and then running right to the beach to get unbelievably dirty in the sand.  When it gets too cold to think getting wet and sandy is fun, kids and their parents can check out the Dragon Park (really Deane's Children's Park, but Dragon Park sounds so much cooler!) or the quaint downtown area with it's shops and unique restaurants. Mercer Island also offers toddler dance classes at Stroum Jewish Community Center as well as swimming lessons and summer camps that your toddler will love!

Once you have decided on the best area for your toddler dance lessons in Seattle, you can begin to look at what studios in your preferred area offer; what the teachers teach, background on the studio and age appropriateness of the skills taught. A good kids dance studio will love children, but more importantly know how to speak to and motivate them.  Teaching children is much different than teach adults, and teaching toddlers is much different than teaching 8 year olds, as many of us know from first hand experience!  When you do a trial class, ask yourself: was the music appropriate for the age group? Were the skills challenging, yet achievable? Was the teacher patient?  Was the facility clean and safe?  Last, but not least, ask your child if he or she had fun!  Did your toddler experience lots of laughs and smiles in class? The right dance studio for children should have the perfect combination of learning and laughter to fully benefit your toddler.

toddler ballet class seattleYour convenience matters to us, which is why our kids dance locations are in safe, kid friendly atmospheres with lots to do. What to Look for in Kids Dance Classes

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Jul 7, 2014 1:20:00 PM

What to Look for in Kids Dance Classes

When choosing a kids dance class there are a few things to keep in mind. Other than just looking at the teachers, it is important to also get informed about the studio at which your child will be dancing. We have put together a small list of things which will hopefully get you thinking about the right dance classes for your child.

The first and most important thing to think about, of course, is EXPERIENCED TEACHERS.

Hip Hop dance class, dance class, kids dance classesWhen first looking at a kids dance class, it is crucial to ask about the teachers. You want to know who will be handling your child's dancing education and in which ways they can impact your child. Ask about the instructor’s qualifications and what background they have with teaching. Did they take any early development classes? Do they have any type of teaching certification? It’s also good to ask if they have experience dealing with children in critical situations such as possessing a CPR certification that could save a child’s life. At Dance to EvOLvE we focus on hiring teachers who are not only amazing dancers but are also great with children and have a strong background. They also have to take our own Dance to EvOLvE courses every once in a while so that we can make sure our curriculum is unified and enforced. You may also want to think about getting to know their ideas about dance. Even though someone may be a great teacher, it is important that their ideas match up with what you want for your child.

What is their teaching philosophy?

Speaking of teachers ideas about dance, it’s a good idea to get to know the company philosophy. What are their core beliefs and what do they plan to instill in your child? Do they believe in large or small dance class sizes? You want to make sure that whatever they may be, those ideas are going to benefit you kid. Take a look at Dance to EvOLvE’s mission http://www.dancetoevolve.com/san-diego/about-evolve/mission/.  Our philosophy is “Your Choice. Our Knowledge. Their Fun!” It’s easy to find and we are held to it! Look for every studios mission statement or philosophy and make sure it’s easy to find!

Research the reputation of the studio and the classes

It never hurts to check out what other people have said about the dance studio you are looking into. Positive feedback is always good reassurement. One question to ask is how long has the dance studio been around and how well established are they? Usually studios with a good number of students shows that they have a solid client base and that the customers are happy with their kids dance class.  See what you can find about them on the internet and ask around to find out if any of your friends are familiar with them so your child can participate in the best dance class possible.

How are they about parental involvement?ballet dance class, dance class, dance class for kids

Something a lot of parents worry about is how open studios are to allowing parental involvement in the dance class? In most studios it just depends on the dancer’s ages. Younger dancers should usually be allowed to have parents in the room but for the older kids it can get loud and distracting when there are parents talking to one another or even talking to their kids during dance class. This can get frustrating so it’s generally better that for older kids, parents stay outside. However, there should be an area to watch the dancers and keep an eye on your kids if you decide to stay for class. Also, try and find dance classes that offer parent involvement once in a while so that you can come into class and actively see what your child is doing. At Dance to EvOLvE, there is a parent observation day where parents can come into class and watch their children learn new things during dance class. Parent’s love to come in and the audience is great for the dancers! Another important thing is communication between teachers and the parents. You as a parent never want to feel left in the dark about what is happening in class so make sure that there is open communication with teachers at the studio and that you can always call and talk to someone about any concerns you may have.

We hope that this guide was helpful to you when looking for kids dance classes. If there are any other suggestions you may have feel free to let us know! We love to hear the comments so that we can provide better help and more support for the rest of you!

Dance Classes Can Be Positive For Your Child

Posted by Brittany White on Oct 17, 2013 11:39:00 AM

dance classes kids2 resized 600For those of you who have seen Miley Cyrus’ MTV Video Music Award performance, you might have found yourselves a bit appalled at the former Disney star’s obscene actions. Some of you may even have wondered in horror “Is this how kids dance nowadays?” and find yourselves not wanting to let your own little ones get dancing experience. But no matter how cringe-worthy Cyrus’ performance was, rest assured that dance isn’t quite all that bad! In fact, it has been proven that dance can have a strong positive influence on your child, so don’t be deterred! Here are some of the ways dance can have a strong positive influence on your child.

 Improved Physical Health

Dancing is a remarkably physical activity, and kids who regularly attend dance classes should expect to see a vast improvement in their overall physical health. Benefits include increased flexibility, physical strength, range of motion, stamina, and better posture. For children who are slightly overweight, dance can help them become healthier and improve their eating habits!

 describe the imageSocialization Benefits

Dance is also an exceptionally social activity - many of our dancers have become best friends with other children in their classes! Dance classes can help children practice their social and communication skills, learn teamwork, and develop a greater sense of trust. If your little one is shy, we have heard from many parents that after taking dance lessons, their child has become much more outgoing and comfortable around new people and places. Dance can help overcome stage fright as well!

 Educational Benefits

As your dancer begins to blossom into a skilled dancer, they will learn discipline, focus, and skills that will be useful in other areas of his or her life. Dance lessons can help get those creative juices flowing and an appreciation for the arts. FamilyTalk magazine has estimated that students with a dance background tend to do academically better than students who don’t have a dance background. They are also said to do better in science and math competitions and are observed to achieve higher SAT scores.

 describe the imageImproved Self-Esteem

The more comfortable your little dancers get with their body, the more their self-esteem will improve. As they get more familiar with the movements and postures they learn in dance class, they start to get a better sense of their bodies. The skills they develop help them foster a more positive attitude and encourage them to explore self-expression. For children with physical or mental disabilities, this can be particularly beneficial.

Even with the notorious dance reputation that celebrities are giving nowadays, it certainly does not have to be that way! Dance is can be profoundly beneficial, so why not give it a try today? You can sign up for one of our free trial classes today both in San Diego and Chicago - you and your little one will love it!
