Fun Fourth of July Activities for Kids

Posted by Helen McCarthy on Jul 3, 2017 10:02:00 PM

The Fourth of July is fast approaching! This holiday usually brings time spent with family and friends enjoying a classic summer bbq - and of course everything red, white, and blue. Whether you are attending a block party or celebrating at home, we have some great ideas for getting your little ones involved with some fun Independence Day activities for kids!

The most essential part of any party that you plan is the food! There are so many holiday snacks you can make, and the best part is that you can get the kids involved in the preparation. There is always fun to be had decorating cookies or cupcakes with red, white, and blue sprinkles or frosting. Its great to see all the creative designs the little ones come up with, and they have a blast helping you out. Another great summer dish that they can help you prepare is fruit salad. Not only is this a nutritional addition to any BBQ menu, but it is also such a refreshing, quick, and easy entree to prepare. Whether you just choose to prepare a classic fruit salad using your favorite festive fruit or get creative using cookie cutters to cut fruit into cute star shapes it’s sure to be a hit. You can also have the kids help you make a unique dessert by creating kabobs with fruit, brownies, marshmallows - really anything that you want! These are delicious and effortless!

Moving on from the food, another great area of the prep that the little ones love to help out with is the decorating! This can be a tricky task, but don’t feel like you need to go out and buy decorations that you are only going to use for one day when you can make your own to last for years to come! We found a great way to not only create super cute star suncatchers, but also use all those old crayons you have laying around the house. These festive decorations will definitely be a crowd pleaser at any party, and the kids will have a blast making them with you!

We also have so many DYI craft ideas that kids and adults alike can play with while enjoying the food and festivities! Confetti launchers are the perfect at-home alternative to fireworks without all the safety hazards. There is sure to be fun to have with these confetti cannons for all ages. The kids can help out with creating their own unique designs on the outside of the cannons and will love setting off their own fireworks! Another easy craft that everyone can get involved in is the creation and exploration of slime! Not only can you make the slime Fourth of July themed, but it’s a great Independence day activity for kids. And finally, what better way to cool down on a hot summer’s day than to have a water balloon fight?! You can even split into different teams to have Patriots against the British to have your own historical battle.

The last key ingredient to any party is the music! Make sure to have a playlist planned with all your family’s favorite songs to groove to! Your little ones will love busting out some of the moves they have been learning in their Dance To EvOLvE classes or summer camps, and now is the perfect time to share them with the rest of the family!

And of course, the main attraction of any 4th of July festivities is the fireworks show! Don’t forget to plan out the best viewing sight to enjoy a fireworks show! In San Diego there are usually a few shows to be seen from anywhere along the beach or the bay. From watching the annual parades in Coronado or Old Town to enjoying the day at the Del Mar Fair, to spending the day at the beach. There are so many great Fourth of July activities for kids in San Diego. If you live in Chicago make sure to check out all the parades and music festivals they have located throughout the area! So much fun ready to ensue for the entire family with all the events planned - Chicago is definitely prepared with many activities for kids on Independence Day!

We hope you have a great time trying out some of these activities and exploring your city on this fun-filled holiday! Wishing you all the best dance parties and time spent with those you love with these 4th of July activities for kids!

New Children’s Dance Classes in Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Nov 29, 2016 4:53:14 PM

The Windy City has new children’s dance classes available! Here at Dance To EvOLvE, we are proud to announce that we will be holding kids dance classes in Rogers Park beginning January 2017. Additionally, we will also be hosting after school/daycare programs where your children can dance with us!

If you’re on the fence about signing your child up for kid’s dance classes, check out the reasons we encourage even the littlest ones to start dancing! Here, we have put together great information about the benefits of dance at an early age. It introduces kids to a different way of thinking, expands their socialization skills and keeps them physically healthy.

DTEchildballerina.jpg

What Dancing Does at a Young Age

While you might think that your children are too young to be taking dance classes, think of all the benefits that dance brings along. Dancing allows children the freedom of expression in a way few other activities can. This can often open up a new perspective of thinking that will carry on with them throughout their lives. Examined Existence, a website that studies the different activities that affect the human body, states that “experts from Stanford University say that dancing is great at involving all the brain functions simultaneously – from musical and kinesthetic, to rational and emotional.” Not only does dance help young individuals feel more confident in expressing themselves and utilizing their mind, but overall young dancers have a major advantage of unlocking their fullest potential. Children’s dance classes help those who want to learn the true art form of expression the opportunity to channel their skill and energy into a positive and grand spectrum. As an added bonus, allowing them to exhaust all their energy in a kid’s dance class instead of home means less clean up work and a happier/healthier child (and parent for that matter)!

The Importance of Arts Within a Community

When it comes to the arts, The Windy City is blowing us away with their new innovative and intricate mindsets.  Whether it be music, drawing or children's dance classes, these mindsets often stem from young individuals that make an impact within the community. Allowing for a community to build means a better future, which is the true purpose of art. In Strengthening Communities Through Dance by Dee Decker, the author states “Many key principles of social interaction including creativity and teamwork are displayed at community dances.  Dancers are allowed to express their creativity in a nonverbal format. [...] Through dance, we are laying the foundation to share in the camaraderie, to be healthier, and to strengthen communities.”

Art allows for individuals to come together to build, create, and discover. Within a community we build relations with one another, we create memories that will last us a lifetime, and we discover ourselves. Be involved in your community by signing your child up for kid’s dance classes and watch the social connections blossom!

How Can I Make Sure My Child Fully Expresses Themselves

Allowing your child to stray from daily routine by putting them in some extracurricular activity that they enjoy is the first step. The second step is to make sure that your child works to their fullest potential, which means balancing work, nutrition, and fun. The third step, which is the most important step, is to guide them throughout the process and in life in general. It’s not enough to just hold their hands or to sign them up for what you see as beneficial, but actually get involved. Parental Rights, a website that delivers information to protect children by empowering parents states, “students with involved parents tend to earn higher grades, have better social skills, and are more likely to graduate and go on to post-secondary education.” So this means that the parent cheering for their child during a basketball game or practicing dance drills with them before a recital is more encouraging than the parent that just lets their child run amuck. Get involved with your children, because to them you're irreplaceable.

Dance Studio For Kids and Art Education in Balboa Park

Posted by Brittany White on Sep 22, 2016 10:31:30 PM

Balboa Park is notorious for its art and culture. For many years, families have come to this area for its museums, gardens, attractions, and venues. There are events always happening and endless things to do near Balboa Park. They have the San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego Museum of Art, Alcazar Garden, Botanical Building, Japanese Friendship Garden, San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park Carousel, Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theatre, and now a dance studio for kids!

Being a parent, children are priority. You think, “where can I take my kid today?” or “where can my kid play with other kids?”

Now that there are dance studios for kids near balboa park, that adds another activity to the list of things to do!

Why Should My Kid Dance at Balboa Park?

dancesummercamp2-1.jpgTrips to the San Diego Zoo or Balboa Park Carousel, require constant parental  supervision. Having a dance studio for toddlers near Balboa Park gives kids that opportunity to not only interact with other children, but move and grove with them (and gives parents a bit of a break)!

What is so fantastic about these dance classes for children near Balboa Park, is that it is near Balboa Park. If you are concerned about your child having too much energy during an outing to the Museum of Man, you might want to consider taking them to a dance class before to spend that energy. And what better way than through artistic expression?!

After your toddler finishes their dance class, you can take them to a museum they have never been to, or stroll through a garden while they demonstrate the new moves they learned!

It also is an excuse to see what attractions Balboa Park has every week!

Dance studios for kids adds a great addition to the art Balboa Park offers. Dance is an art because every dance tells a story. It is a story that you are able to tell without using your mouth, but your body. Of course, being young, children will not completely see the art that dance truly is, but it exposes them the different types of art there are in this world.

Why Should I Expose My Child to Art If They Don’t Understand It?

Just because they do not fully understand it, does not mean it is not important. Art is very important for early childhood development. Through art, kids are able to explore, observe, and imitate. Children learn how to control themselves and how to control their environments, which is an important skill to have.

2016-01-13_11.19.29.jpg

Being able to explore and experiment can trigger toddler’s brains and activate their fine motor skills, cognitive development skills, and many other skills depending on the art.

Nowadays, schools have had budget cuts and, therefore, arts have been the first to go. Parents can still expose their child to various art in Balboa Park, such as dance, sculputre, photography or even fascinating architecture. Luckily for San Diego, we have a whole park full of art and culture!

How Will I Know If My Child Will Like Dancing?

You will never know unless you give it a shot! According to What To Expect, a pregnancy and parenting website, children are naturally attuned to sound and rhythm and will respond to music by smiling, swaying, bouncing up and down, or even clapping their hands. If you notice your child responding to music, it would be a good idea to have them try dance classes!

Do I Have To Pay To Find Out? What If I Just Want to Try One Class?

Dance To EvOLvE offers a trial class for your child to try out risk free! What have you got to lose? Even your trial class will result in a visit to one of the most visited urban parks in the country. Click below to try us today!

In addition to TOPGUN, this air station is also home to the Miramar Air Show! This is one of San Diego's most popular events. 3 Reasons Homeschool Students Should Take Ballet

Posted by Brittany White on Dec 14, 2015 11:00:50 AM

Ballet is a great extracurricular activity for homeschooled students. Due to their flexible schedules, these students have the special opportunity to participate in ballet class any time of the day. Homeschooling also presents its own unique set of challenges, which is often reflected in a child’s behavior and performance. Consider three ways your child can benefit from taking ballet class while in homeschool.

1. Structure

Kids_ballet_class.jpgHomeschooling is a great option for highly motivated students. However, if there is little to no structure in the home, it can have a negative impact on a child’s ability to focus and stay on task. Ballet class can provide the much needed discipline and structure that might otherwise be lacking in the home. Ballet students are taught to show respect for authority, demonstrate proper etiquette in the classroom, and learn responsibility. Being on someone else’s schedule also teaches a homeschooled student time management, a skill that not only helps them with their academics, but even prepares them for the workforce. Check your local dance schools, studios, and recreation centers for midday classes; some of these have created classes specifically with the homeschooler in mind.

2. Socialization

Some homeschooled students have the tendency to be shy or withdrawn; others are hungry for interaction. Ballet class gives homeschooled students the opportunity to socialize with others their age, giving them a sense of community. Many students have forged lifelong friendships based on their mutual love for dance. Through fun, interactiveactivities, ballet students learn to cooperate with others, creating a positive and supportive dynamic in the classroom. Whether a student is learning to be more assertive, or learning how to play well with others, this environment helps homeschooled students develop better social skills in, and outside the classroom.

ballet1.jpg

3. Skill

Every child, homeschooled or not, needs exercise. Ballet class is especially great for homeschool students because it fulfills physical education requirements and gives them a chance to blow off some energy. Contrary to popular belief among many young ones, ballet, however, is not about prancing around in a tutu. Ballet is beautiful, but it’s also very challenging. Ballet technique gives students a full-body workout, enhancing their motor skills, and improving their balance and coordination. Homeschooled students have a particular advantage since they can usually devote more time to practice. When they diligently apply themselves, homeschooled students have the opportunity to accelerate and improve, which in turn, increases their self-confidence.

Ballet, as well as other dance forms, has many physical, mental, and emotional benefits for homeschooled students. It instills principles that help them become better students, children, and members of the community. If you’re considering putting your homeschooler in an extracurricular activity, never underestimate the power of dance.

Local Hip-Hop Classes for Kids & Toddlers

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Sep 30, 2014 11:04:00 AM

There are so many types of dance styles available, it can be hard to find one that your child is interested in.   Along with the many kids dance classes out there comes the common questions, what dance styles are good for ages or personality types? What does each dance style offer? One of the most popular these days is hip-hop classes for kids and toddlers. Read on to find out if hip-hop dance classes will prove to be a good fit for your kids!

local hip hop dance classLocal hip-hop classes for kids in Chicago focus on creativity, coordination, and listening skills. These kids dance classes are great for expression as their own personal dance style can shine through. Hip-Hop promotes individualism and expression of all kind. Your child will be encouraged to be nothing other than themselves in this exciting, fast paced environment.  Chicago offers several opportunities for hip-hop as well as chances for creativity. Check out our schedule page to find a local kids dance class that is right for your little groover.

What Personality Type is Best For a Hip-Hop Dance Class?

Hip-hop can fit with lots of different personality types but those with a creative, energetic, fast paced brain may be a perfect candidate for this dance style. Local hip-hop classes for kids in San Diego are great for a variety of ages. Take the time to find an appropriate local dance studio and once that is done, see what ages are common for the hip-hop dance classes. Hip-hop can be catered towards any age, even for toddlers as young as two. Check out Kid Ventures in the 4S Ranch neighborhood of San Diego.  It has an imaginative play space and fun classes to enhance your toddler’s creativity.

Hip-hop is a great dance class for a child to start with because it introduces creativity, individualism and basic moves. Your child will learn how to express themselves, dance with those around them and increase confidence by testing out any new moves they may have.  Local hip-hop classes for kids in Seattle are a perfect way to start your kid in a new activity. It’s hard not to enjoy a dance class that plays some of the latest beats and introduces some of the latest moves.  With all the amazing creative and cultural opportunities in Seattle, make our kids hip-hop dance class the stop local hip hop dance class

What Does Hip-Hop Really Entail?

There is sometimes a concern that hip-hop can be questionable for children or involve inappropriate music. While that can be the case in certain circumstances, it is not the spirit of hip-hop. Hip-Hop is a form of self-expression that involves energetic moves, such as popping and breakdancing, all within appropriate measures with appropriate music.  The main idea is that there are no wrong moves here and your superstar is free to create any original moves as well as test out some they have been working on. If you have a child who doesn't show a particular interest in dance but is into some serious ninja moves, check a hip-hop dance class out! You will be amazed how much they get into it. All styles and moves are free to be expressed here.

EvOLvE wants your child to have a blast when dancing as well as grow physically and mentally.  According to www.nedo.org, “dance helps children physically, emotionally, socially and cognitively.”  Taking a local hip-hop class for kids is a great way to help your kid grow to their full potential.  These kids dance classes teach so much more than just basic dance moves. We hope that this information helped. As always, if you have any more questions or comments, please feel free to let us know or check out our twitter page for neat information on ballet and tap.

Preschool and Toddler Dance Locations in Seattle!

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Aug 11, 2014 2:22:00 PM

Dancing is everywhere. On the streets, in the kitchen, on the T.V., with so much dancing around us, it can still be hard to find proper kids dance classes in Seattle.  Location is everything!  What fun is a dance class if it is too difficult or too far to get to? It’s also important to take into consideration commute time on different times of the day. With location being so important, Dance to EvOLvE has made it a mission to provide convenient studios in fun, accessible areas.  Read on to find out more about our up and coming dance locations.

preschooler ballet class seattleNorthgate local dance classes

Northgate local dance classes are hip hop and combination tap/ballet.  These are specially designed toddler dance classes that we have scheduled at easily accessible times. Our Northgate kids dance studio is conveniently located behind the Northgate Mall. Drop your child off at their dance class and take some time for yourself or take your superstar for a bite to eat after they rocked their first lesson. We ensure that our toddler dance classes are in locations that are not only easy to get to but are safe and kid friendly for your child.

University Heights local dance classes

The University Heights community center notkids dance class studio seattle only offers kids dance classes in Seattle, but a whole calendar of events ranging from monthly picnics, to painting classes and art camps for your toddler. Take a kids dance class one week and an art camp the next week to keep your child busy, engaged and active throughout these summer months as well as throughout the year.  Similar to Northgate, University Heights local dance classes are tap, ballet and hip-hop. Take advantage of all these fun activities and we hope to see you and your toddler in the dance studio soon!

Mercer Island local dance classes

With beach living everywhere you look, Mercer Island is a great location for some fun kids dance classes and activities.  Nothing is better in a child's mind than dancing your heart out in the studio and then running right to the beach to get unbelievably dirty in the sand.  When it gets too cold to think getting wet and sandy is fun, kids and their parents can check out the Dragon Park (really Deane's Children's Park, but Dragon Park sounds so much cooler!) or the quaint downtown area with it's shops and unique restaurants. Mercer Island also offers toddler dance classes at Stroum Jewish Community Center as well as swimming lessons and summer camps that your toddler will love!

Once you have decided on the best area for your toddler dance lessons in Seattle, you can begin to look at what studios in your preferred area offer; what the teachers teach, background on the studio and age appropriateness of the skills taught. A good kids dance studio will love children, but more importantly know how to speak to and motivate them.  Teaching children is much different than teach adults, and teaching toddlers is much different than teaching 8 year olds, as many of us know from first hand experience!  When you do a trial class, ask yourself: was the music appropriate for the age group? Were the skills challenging, yet achievable? Was the teacher patient?  Was the facility clean and safe?  Last, but not least, ask your child if he or she had fun!  Did your toddler experience lots of laughs and smiles in class? The right dance studio for children should have the perfect combination of learning and laughter to fully benefit your toddler.

3 Things To look For When Choosing A Dance Studio in Chicago

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Feb 7, 2014 6:28:00 PM

Choosing a dance studio in Chicago for your little dancer can be overwhelming as there are so many things to consider. Not to worry parents! Here are three key points you should look for when deciding where to start your child’s journey in dance.

1) AGE APPROPRIATE: One of the most important things to consider when searching for a dance studio in Chicago for your little dancer is a dance studio that specializes in the age of your child...especially if you have little dancer. Dance classes should always be age appropriate in levelkiddanceclass of skill. After all you wouldn’t want your little dancer dancing to Gangnam Style in their tap class! All dance studios offer tiny tot classes but many really focus on the advanced dance classes.  We suggest that if you have a young dancer, a studio that has great tiny tot dance classes would be an ideal fit as it is a completely different skill set of a teacher who can teach advanced classes versus engaging a tiny tot.  So always be on the look out for those dance studios who truly dedicate their dance classes to having age appropriate classes and dance studios that just have a true love for children.

2) PROFESSIONAL: Wherever the dance classes take place, whether it be in a recreational room or on a beautiful dance stage… professionalism is the outer face of the business.  Now you might be asking yourself, well what makes a good professional first impression?  Just think of what you wouldn’t want your little dancer dancing in or around.  A dance class could be on a beautiful stage in downtown Chicago, but if the floor looks like it hasn’t been mopped in a few months and there are hazardous things surround the stage, probably not the best dance studio for your dancer.  Also look at what kind of props the teacher uses with children during dance class.  Do they have their own “color” to stand on? Do they get little things to hold onto to make them feel special? Do they get little goodbye stickers and hugs?  Once again, depending on the age and level of the dancer, it depends on what you need to look for.  Advanced classes require special floors while younger classes may not require the specific floor or room but does require a great teacher who uses props to engage their dancers.  Overall, you can tell a lot about the dance studio on how they present themselves and how they interact with the dancers during the class.

3) NURTURING: One last thing to keep in mind when searching for a dance studio in Chicago, is a class full of dance technique and laughter.  Your dancer might be too young to be in a strict ballet class. On the other side a class full of laughter, fun and games can be interesting to your danceclassforkidsdancer, but may not have all of the age appropriate discipline you as a parent were looking for.  That’s why you want to find a dance studio that provides a dance class that has the combination of both dance technique and laughter.  Children learn from laughter and should be used as tool for the dancer’s to progress.  Not every dance studio may have this type of dance class, but when you find one that does… you know that dance studio is a keeper!

Selecting the best age-appropriate, presentable, and engaging dance studio in Chicago is no easy task. However, if you look in the right places and keep all these tips in mind, it's definitely possible. I hope this short guide to fidning a dance studio in Chicago for your little new dancer helped.
