Summer Dance Class Themes with Dance to EvOLvE

Posted by Helen McCarthy on May 27, 2017 8:14:01 PM

Summer is fast approaching - crazy right!? With the kids home all day without school you are going to want activities that keep them active, involved, and social. Luckily, at Dance To EvOLvE we have been hard at work planning themed weeks to keep our our current kids dance classes fun and fresh this summer!

FullSizeRender 2 copy.jpg

What better way to kickstart the summer than to dance outside? The summer themes begin with Dance Outside Week, where dancers get to enjoy the beautiful weather that comes with the new season (or lack thereof at our San Diego locations). Teachers often choose to spend the games portion of class outside, or even teach their entire class in the fresh air! These activities will be in safe, shady areas, but be sure that your dancers bring plenty of water on this day so that they stay hydrated!

The fun outdoors doesn't end there – get ready for anything and everything bubbles on Bubble Day! Teachers might add an under the sea mermaid twist to the theme or opt for a more whimsical take on the idea. During game time dancers will have an opportunity to venture outdoors to play with all types of bubbles. From large bubbles they can chase with friends to small bubble wands they can twirl around with, your little one will have many opportunities to find creative ways to incorporate bubbles into movement and dance.

During Beach Week we bring the tropical mindset to the studio! Our San Diego students are already familiar with the sandy beaches by the ocean, so this is a fun way to incorperate their favorite summertime activities into dance class. Dancers at our Chicago locations will get to travel to more coastal shores without hopping on a plane. On beach days dancers get to dress in their favorite beach-going attire – a super fun way to switch up their normal dance class routine. Beach themed games will be set up during the allotted game time. Sure to be a blast!

Families, you will get a chance to put on your dancing shoes and learn a few steps from your young dancer during Parents Get Involved Day! This class is all about being a part of the Dance To EvOLvE family, so you definitely do not want to miss out. You can look forward to some partner dancing with your little one, and they will love to show you what they have been learning in class. Older dancers will also have the opportunity to teach their families some new moves they learned – a super fun activity for all participants that is guaranteed to improve dance parties at home.

IMG_5448.jpg

Switch Up The Style Day is a great way to expose our students to different dance styles that they might not have learned before! For example, classes during this week could potentially incorporate some hip-hop moves into a ballet/tap class. Teachers might choose to change up small sections of the routines throughout the class or simply change the entire class to a different style. The possibilities are endless with this theme, and we can’t wait to see the unique ideas our teachers come up with!

The Dance to EvOLvE team is excited to experience the creativity and laughter that our themed summer classes bring – from enjoying the great outdoors, to fun with costumes and bubbles, to seeing YOU bust some moves on the dance floor! Be sure to keep your eye of for these special classes on the announcement page so that your dancer is a part of the fun!

If you are looking for other ways to keep your little one active this summer, look no further than our Dance To EvOLvE summer camps! We are hosting a wide range of themes and locations this summer that are a perfect way to creatively focus their energy, keep their minds active, and build friendships outside of school. Extra Curricular Activities for Kids in Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Aug 10, 2016 11:10:52 AM

Summer is coming to an end soon which means school is on it’s way back into our lives. We all know parents are excited to get back their sanity, but for the kids, the world is coming to an end. Kids tend not to to be excited and to go back to school, but mostly they want to get their mind off it by doing extracurricular activities. Here are some ideas of activities they can do outside of school here in Chicago!

  1. Play ball!

soccer.jpg

Playing a sport can be self-fulfilling for kids. It teaches them how to be a team player, and how to be the best they can be in something they enjoy. They can get involved in school sports clubs or even go out and join teams that are not associated with the school. Maybe they can try something out of their comfort level and try different sports! If they love soccer, great, maybe they could also try tennis too! Usually soccer players can play tennis really well because of their coordination. Extra curricular activities like these are very beneficial for kids who have a lot of energy and for kids who need practice becoming more social. Whether it is basketball, tennis, or any type of sport, this will allow them to have fun while they also stay in shape!

  1. Music Lessons
music.jpg

Music is a great way for your child to be more cultural. Studies show that playing an instrument releases stress and improves your IQ. This leads to higher test scores because learning how to read music and understanding how to use the right side of your brain more makes kids become more intellectual. Piano lessons are the stereotypical instrument to practice as a kid, but they can try the drums, or even a ukulele! Give them an instrument to look forward to playing when they get home!

  1.  Community Service
community_service4.jpg

Getting involved in your community is a wonderful way to for your child to gain self pride knowing that they are doing something good. Whether it is volunteering at the local food and clothes closet, to cleaning up the shores of Lake Michigan, doing something that is noble teaches them how to give back and practice being kind and humble person. This will take their mind off the stresses of school and get them outdoors! They can sign up here to start volunteering! There are many organizations and activities they can do around Chicago!

  1.  Get Them Outside!
outside.jpg

Vitamin D is important for growing kids! They need to run around outside and use their imagination, because a healthy imagination leads to a happier and a more stress free child. Kids are only grow up once, this is their chance to roll around in the dirt and have fun while they are young. Take time out of their day where they are off their electronic devices and get them to go outside and enjoy the nature! Being stuck in a classroom all day for 5 days a week can be overwhelming, let them get some fresh air!

  1.   Get Them Moving and Grooving!

Summer Activity Ideas for Kids or Toddlers in San Diego & Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Jun 28, 2016 12:42:39 PM

Summer is the time when kids’ imagination run wild and they can be anything they want to be. This is the season where they make the most unforgettable memories, so make sure they do a lot of fun activities where they can learn and use their imagination. Watch them have fun and be kids because they grow up so fast! So here are some summer activities for toddlers in San Diego and Chicago you could do!

  1. Go To The San Diego Zoo or Lincoln Park Zoo!ZOO.png

The zoo is a great summer activity with your kid or toddler because there are many things you can see and do! Learning about animals and seeing them in person is a great way for your kid to learn and explore what our oceans and lands consist of! Going to the zoo helps your children learn about how the zoo helps take care of endangered species and protects them from harm. Being with these amazing animals can bring fun to your day and maybe even a new passion for your kid!

  1.   Head To Balboa Park Museums or the Chicago History Museum!Museum_.png

Going to any museum, whether it’s history, science, or art, is a great summer activity for kids that can bring out a hidden passion in your child. Every museum has something special about it and going there can uncover something that you never thought would interest you. Museums are super cool because you learn a lot about what the museum is about. Plus, going to a lot of different museums can help your kid become more well rounded culturally and intellectually. Check out the Chicago History Museum and find out about Illinois' own President Lincoln and "Lincoln's Chicago". Balboa Park in San Diego is also a great place because it has many museums and has unique architecture. It’s good for young kids to learn about things they never heard before and it gives them a sense of accomplishment and interest in different subjects and it is a great summer activity for kids in San Diego and Chicago.

  1.   Cool Off At Mystic Waters or Aquatica!waterpark.png

A great way to stay cool this summer and to burn some toddler energy is to head to the nearest water park or local pool! Swimming is a great summer activity for kids in Chicago and San Diego and teaching toddlers to swim is very important! Kids should ideally be swimming on their own at around age 6. Plus, if the summer heat is getting to you, it’s a great way to stay cool while teaching your child a very important life lesson. If you want to have some more fun, head to a waterpark! Although swimming is fun, both Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center in Chicago and Aquatica in San Diego have fun water slides and cool activities for your kid and for you to enjoy as well!

  1.   Head To Your Local Body of Water       Beach.png

Going to the beach, lake, or even river can be a lot of fun for the family! If you are in San Diego head to Coronado or somewhere along the coast so your family can stay cool under that marine layer. Or maybe if you are in Chicago, head to Lake Michigan! You can head in the water, tan, or even have a nice picnic. It’s a great way to spend your time outside while having your kids run around and enjoy the summer sun. All of these waterways are free for us to use so take advantage of it! So go cool off, and get outside with the family and bring some beach games for all of you to enjoy as a fun activity for your kid or toddler.

  1.   Stay In And Build A Fort!                         Fort.png

Want to just stay in your air conditioned home but still do a fun summer activity for kids? Get some sheets and blankets and build a fort! It is so much fun to build and you can make a game out of it saying your fort is actually a pirate ship or maybe a tent in the jungle. This gets your kid to explore their imagination and create fun memories with you. You can watch movies in the tent or many other fun activities. This is a fun bonding moment to spend with your kid and it will create a lot of fun memories. Plus, and added bonus is that they may want to stay in their "secret fort" with "no parents allowed" which frees you up read a book (or more likely clean the kitchen).

  1.     Sign Them Up for Summer Dance Classes and Camps Kids_dance.png

Dancing is a great way to let your toddler find him or herself. Dancing at a young age can help them gain self-esteem and create a better focus, and is a great summer activity. Rhythm and dancing is a wonderful talent to have because it gets them moving around and they have fun while doing it. Dancing is in a way better than actual sports because you have the chance to be creative, make something of your own, and learn something new everyday. One of the best things about dancing is that there are no limits, you can tell a story through movement, and that is what makes it unique. Sign up your child for some fun dance classes or summer dance camps and you will have fun watching them grow. It is a wonderful summer activity for kids in San Diego and Chicago.

5 Reasons To Do Summer Dance Camps

Posted by Brittany White on Mar 25, 2016 11:07:35 AM

How many parents out there are starting to think about summer camps and vacations?! Summer is filled with so many different options for families to explore. Kids (even the young ones!) can participate in programs with many different time frame options allowing them to try something new for as long or little as they want. Why not try a summer dance camp to take a break from the sun and heat? Summer dance camps typically allow kids to try different styles of dance, work quickly towards a performance, and learn in a fun, relaxing environment. Read on to see why dancing in the summer is such a fun time of the year!

1. Keep The Juices Flowing

Throughout the school year kids are learning all day, every day. Summer dance camps are a great resource to trigger their brains in a fun and athletic way through physical and observational learning. Students memorize sequences of steps, rhythm patterns in music, spacing, and formations, keeping those brains active! Studies show that when we make split-second, quick decisions (like when we dance), we create new neural pathways that increase our intelligence. Give your kids a break from school but keep their minds engaged through dancing!

2. Give Them A Sun Break

We all want to enjoy the sunshine this time of year but many kids appreciate some time out of the heat here and there. Dance camps  typically take place inside with maybe a snack, lunch, game, or craft break outside for fresh air. Switch up your summer camps a bit and give your child some variation for dealing with the heat.Creative_Explorers_Summer_Dance_Camp.jpg

3. Explore New Dance Styles

Many parents are interested in short commitments for their children until they find what they are truly passionate about. Summer is the perfect time to try new dance styles like ballet, tap, and hip hop to see what really gets a kid moving! Many dance camps offer a crash course to a specific style or they fuse several styles within a week and focus more on fun. If one style isn't a good fit for whatever reason, a dancer will quickly move on to another after a day or a week. If you are looking for serious improvement, check out a summer dance intensive.

4. Get Maximum Creativity

If your child is drawn to creativity, summer dance camps are a perfect fit! Kids get many chances to share their creativity through movement, games, arts and crafts, and songs. Some dance camps even involve costume design, choreography mentoring, and hair and make-up techniques for the stage!

378265_533321693377985_2034750124_n-1.jpg

5. Make New Friends

Dancing creates a team-like atmosphere because the participants must work together to create the finished product. Because camps tend to be half day, many kids will schedule play dates with new friends after camp too! This is a great way for kids to make new friends and create special memories that will last a life time!

You can find dance camps through your local studios, community centers, or creative arts programs. Do a search online and see what kinds of options you have for this summer! Registration typically starts early so stay ahead of the game and reserve your spot!  We hope this helped and if you have any questions or comments please feel free to let us know!

St. Patrick's Day Kids Activities

Posted by Brittany White on Mar 16, 2016 10:21:15 AM

It's about that time when the color green is starting to appear everywhere you look! Images of leprachauns and 4 leaf clovers seem to fill the streets. This holiday is celebrated all over the world, thanks to a guy named Saint Patrick, who was apparently called, the "Apostle of Ireland".  St. Patrick's Day was made a traditional "feast day" in the 17th century to celebrate this former Saint. Now, however, the celebration of St. Patrick's life has turned into a celebration of all things Irish! This includes wearing green, using food coloring to make everything you eat green, and, of course, chasing leprachauns. Kids love to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, and there are so many ways to do so!
Here are a few different ways to celebrate St. Paddy's Day with your kids!

St. Patrick's Day Party Ideas for Kids
What better way to get your children involved in St. Patrick's Day than to host a party? You can have them invite friends, or just keep it between family! Either way, with these St. Patrick's Day party ideas, you are guaranteed a good time.

Snacks
The first thing you need to make any party great is yummy snacks! This Shamrock Shake is so festive and, yes, it is quite healthy! This means there is room to drizzle some chocolate syrup on top for the perfect mint and chocolate mixture. This shake is a great way to get your kids in the St. Paddy's Day mood! You can find the recipe here.
shamrock-shake-20ab.jpg

Another delicious snack to celebrate the day with is a Shamrock Rice Krispie Treat! It may not be as healthy as the shake, but hey, calories don't count on holidays, right? Plus, your kids will absolutely love not only eating these Rice Krispies, but making them too! What a great way to spend some quality time together and to see they joy on their face when they see what they have made!

                                rice-krispies-shamrocks.jpg

Crafts
Another party idea for kids to celebrate St. Patrick's Day is crafts! After having both the Rice Krispie treats and the shake, use their sugar-fueled energy to have them make their own 4 Leaf clover!

four_leaf_clover_st_patricks_day_7_inch_paper_plate-r7c9346e56f2a425aac75433b3a88fd8d_z6cf8_630.jpg

This craft is pretty easy and requires only a paper plate, some paper, green paint, glue, and glitter if you'd like! It is the perfect St. Patrick's Day activity for your kids to get in the spirit of the day while also using their creative sides! (P.S. If the sugar hasn't worn off yet after the craft, send the kids on a treasure hunt around the house to expend some extra energy!)

If your children are pretty artistic and like to build things, a fun St. Patrick's Day kids activity is to have them build a way to "catch" the leprachauns! Maybe they lead the leprachauns into a shoebox by creating a trail of lucky charms, or lure them in with a mini pot of gold! This is a fun activity to do the day before St. Paddy's day, and see the kid's excitement and anticipation to see if they caught any leprachauns!
Hint: Leprachauns are rarely ever caught, but always seem to get away with the gold, and leave a mess behind....

Music
A simple St. Patrick's Day party idea is just to have some Irish music playing! Irish music is so fun to listen to and, with the help of those snacks earlier, could get the kids dancing! If the idea of a kid's dance party sounds a bit daunting, hire a teacher from Dance to EvOLvE to come do the work for you! It doesn't have to be a birthday to schedule a dance party with us. Our teacher will come to you for your St. Patrick's Day party! All you have to do is fill out the information here

Another great St. Paddy's Day Kids Activity: Go to a Parade!
It would not be St. Patrick's Day without an endless amount of parades that thousands of people attend every year! If your family feels like going out and doing something fun, a parade could be just the thing! Kids always love the excitement of the parades and the countless vendors and activities there is for them to do! Because Dance to EvOLvE has locations in both San Diego and Chicago, we have some specific examples of parades that could be fun for your family this St. Patrick's Day!

In San Diego, Balboa Park is having their St. Patrick's Day Festival and Parade for the 36th year. The parade is Saturday, March 12th, starts at 10:30 am and the festival goes until 6 pm. This event will have countless St. Patrick's Day kids activities including rides, face painting, art displays, entertainment, and more!

How much more festive can you get than to dye a river green?! The Chicago river is set to be dyed green on Saturday, March 12th at 9am. Afterwards, get a good seat for the parade which is set to start at noon. All of the information you need can be found here.

St. Patrick's Day is another holiday that gives you the opportunity to enjoy being with your family and to create memories for your children. Kids love to celebrate just about anything, and St. Patrick's Day is a perfect excuse for you to heighten their imagination, creativity, and ultimately just enjoy seeing their joy as they partake in these St. Patrick's Day kids activities. Don't let the opportunity pass you by! Get started on the fun now!

New Miramar Location for Kids Dance Classes!

Posted by Brittany White on Feb 22, 2016 2:01:34 PM

As many people know, San Diego is worthy of the name, "America's Finest City". With the perfect weather, beautiful scenery, and endless activities, it is truly one of the best places to be. Dance to EvOLvE has proudly been a part of this wonderful city for eight years, and we are so excited to continue our involvement in San Diego. That being said, we now get to provide children's dance classes in Miramar! Miramar has so much to offer with countless kids activities, a less than 20 minute drive to the beach, and is also home to the Marine Corps Air Station.

This air station is named Mitscher field after Admiral M.A. Mitscher who was a commander in World War II. Most people, however, know this site as the location where the movie, TOPGUN, was filmed, in response to the training program that was offered here.
 15569-knkx-fsxzip-94-knkxlhd.jpg

In addition to TOPGUN, this air station is also home to the Miramar Air Show! This is one of San Diego's most popular events. At this show, visitors have the rare oppportunity of seeing the talented Blue Angels, the Navy's top pilots. Our new location, held at Flip Force, is literally right across the street from this Air Station. How Cool!
  flip-force-for-intro-page-1-e1447290012868-1.png
Flip Force is a multi-sport competition gym providing many kids activities in Miramar including cheer, tumbling, trampolines, and more! We are so lucky to partner with them to now provide families with more children's dance classes in Miramar.

Another great thing about our Miramar location is the surrounding shops! While your kids are in class, get a membership at the 24 Hour right down the street and get a workout in of your own! Or, UTC mall is only a short 10 minute drive away!  After class, grab some pizza at That's Amore or get some grocery shopping done at Miramar Cash and Carry!  Flip Force is also centrally located in San Diego between the 805 and the 15. This results in easy access from anywhere in the city. Miramar is a wonderful are and we are so excited to add to the list of kids activities in Miramar.
 ballet-class-dance.jpeg

We hope you will take advantage of this new location and join us at Flip Force. Dance to EvOLvE is always seeking to enrich the lives of our students and make a positive impact on them. We also truly believe in the impact that dance has on kids. It helps them not only have a healthier lifestyle and improve their coordination, but also teaches them how to better express themselves and grow into the person they are meant to be.

We do have a FREE dance day available at this location! This free day is used as a teacher training day, so classes may be a bit larger than usual. However, it is a great way to see if your child enjoys the class and if it would be a good fit for them. Come check out the new kids dance studio in Miramar on Monday, March 7th by attending a risk-free trial! We will have a great variation of classes available to check out including ballet, hip hop, and tap for all ages. Click HERE to RSVP.
