Every City Needs a Dance Company

Posted by Brittany White on Nov 18, 2017 5:24:32 PM

For most cities, it is industry that brings people into the area and creates the city for a general purpose. However, it is the arts that stimulate the city to become a living, breathing community where people want to visit and be a part of. Sure there are those who can try to argue against this, but honestly who travels to France and doesn’t visit the Louvre? Or who could leave Florence without having waited at least two hours in line to stare longingly at Michelangelo’s David? Even if you were able to leave these cities without witnessing these masterpieces, the streets in France and Florence are both overflowing with live music and vibrant color that by just walking around along the cobblestones you are swept up into the artwork of the city.

Unfortunately, at some point in our society, the collective opinion has allowed art to only be deemed necessary in large, “upscale” cities. This attitude is especially prevalent when we look at the support of professional dance companies in smaller cities verses cities like New York City. Rather then focusing on a city negatively affected by this lack of artistic support, we want to keep things positive and instead look at a city where they are helping to rebuild a dance company and the benefits the community has experienced from the company’s presence.

Cleveland, OH the city of “rock and roll” is also our amped-up city that has recently revitalized the Cleveland Ballet in 2014. To put things into perspective, Cleveland has a population of 385,809 in comparison to New York City with a population of over 8.538 million! Luckily, the city of Cleveland has not allowed numbers to deter them in their quest for advocating the arts. And what better organization to support than a dance company whose mission is to present “world class dance on stage through classical and new works and to ensure that classical and neoclassical ballet is accessible and relevant to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.” Since the dance company’s revitalization, Cleveland has gained an expanded cultural richness and, of course, seen a rise in a number of cute little ballerinas in tutus. Which, if we are being honest, is one of the best adorable perks of attending any ballet performance.

cleveland-ohio-skyline-michael-tompsett.jpgsource: https://fineartamerica.com/featured/cleveland-ohio-skyline-michael-tompsett.html

There are several examples of how having a dance company in Cleveland has helped the city’s culture. Perhaps the best example is the positive exposure children get from seeing the Cleveland Ballet. The Cleveland Ballet is an especially good example since they regularly participate in outreach activities, and work with schools and other non-profits to expose children from all socioeconomic backgrounds to the arts. Having a professional company also increases Cleveland's support of bringing dance into the community through outreach and community funded events.

The city also moves towards creating more kids dance classes in Cleveland from the Cleveland Ballet’s presence. Besides gaining the professional dance school associated with the ballet company, the city sees an increase in other dance schools both professional and recreational in the area! A huge component in a child’s involvement in dance is getting the child to and from dance class each week. This job normally goes to our lifetime and forever loved personal chauffeurs, our parents. A parent who attends a professional performance of the Nutcracker or Swan Lake witnesses the beauty, hard work and dedication dance requires first hand. From viewing a Cleveland Ballet performance a parent is able to gain a deeper appreciation for the art and become more willing to enroll their child in a kids dance class in Cleveland.

The benefits from enrolling children in a dance class are endless! From building self-esteem to challenging a child’s focus and mind, dance class is a great way to spark creativity in young ones. Kids dance classes also helps kids learn valuable life lessons like that improvement comes with commitment and in order to see results they need to put in the work.  Even a child who simply participates in a recreational dance class in Cleveland will gain the confidence and joy that only a dance class can offer.

In the end, it is the benefits children receive from both being exposed to dance and participating in it themselves through kids dance classes that becomes the ultimate reason for having a professional dance company in every city. Yes, the dance company will bring culture and nightlife to the city, but most importantly it will inspire children to become creative and help them develop an appreciation for the arts thus sustaining art for generations to come.

New Children’s Dance Classes in Chicago

Posted by Brittany White on Nov 29, 2016 4:53:14 PM

The Windy City has new children’s dance classes available! Here at Dance To EvOLvE, we are proud to announce that we will be holding kids dance classes in Rogers Park beginning January 2017. Additionally, we will also be hosting after school/daycare programs where your children can dance with us!

If you’re on the fence about signing your child up for kid’s dance classes, check out the reasons we encourage even the littlest ones to start dancing! Here, we have put together great information about the benefits of dance at an early age. It introduces kids to a different way of thinking, expands their socialization skills and keeps them physically healthy.

DTEchildballerina.jpg

What Dancing Does at a Young Age

While you might think that your children are too young to be taking dance classes, think of all the benefits that dance brings along. Dancing allows children the freedom of expression in a way few other activities can. This can often open up a new perspective of thinking that will carry on with them throughout their lives. Examined Existence, a website that studies the different activities that affect the human body, states that “experts from Stanford University say that dancing is great at involving all the brain functions simultaneously – from musical and kinesthetic, to rational and emotional.” Not only does dance help young individuals feel more confident in expressing themselves and utilizing their mind, but overall young dancers have a major advantage of unlocking their fullest potential. Children’s dance classes help those who want to learn the true art form of expression the opportunity to channel their skill and energy into a positive and grand spectrum. As an added bonus, allowing them to exhaust all their energy in a kid’s dance class instead of home means less clean up work and a happier/healthier child (and parent for that matter)!

The Importance of Arts Within a Community

When it comes to the arts, The Windy City is blowing us away with their new innovative and intricate mindsets.  Whether it be music, drawing or children's dance classes, these mindsets often stem from young individuals that make an impact within the community. Allowing for a community to build means a better future, which is the true purpose of art. In Strengthening Communities Through Dance by Dee Decker, the author states “Many key principles of social interaction including creativity and teamwork are displayed at community dances.  Dancers are allowed to express their creativity in a nonverbal format. [...] Through dance, we are laying the foundation to share in the camaraderie, to be healthier, and to strengthen communities.”

Art allows for individuals to come together to build, create, and discover. Within a community we build relations with one another, we create memories that will last us a lifetime, and we discover ourselves. Be involved in your community by signing your child up for kid’s dance classes and watch the social connections blossom!

How Can I Make Sure My Child Fully Expresses Themselves

Allowing your child to stray from daily routine by putting them in some extracurricular activity that they enjoy is the first step. The second step is to make sure that your child works to their fullest potential, which means balancing work, nutrition, and fun. The third step, which is the most important step, is to guide them throughout the process and in life in general. It’s not enough to just hold their hands or to sign them up for what you see as beneficial, but actually get involved. Parental Rights, a website that delivers information to protect children by empowering parents states, “students with involved parents tend to earn higher grades, have better social skills, and are more likely to graduate and go on to post-secondary education.” So this means that the parent cheering for their child during a basketball game or practicing dance drills with them before a recital is more encouraging than the parent that just lets their child run amuck. Get involved with your children, because to them you're irreplaceable.

Benefits Within The Different Styles of Kids Dance Classes

Kids: they dance before they learn there is anything that isn’t music.” -William Stafford
DSC_0469-2-2.jpg

Children are natural movers and shakers! Anyone who has children, younger siblings, or has babysat know they have bundles of energy. It takes them nearly a year to take their first steps, but once they’re on their feet, there is no stopping them!

Kids are constantly moving. They move to express their feelings or thoughts; when they’re happy, they tend to bounce up and down and when they’re sad or angry, they throw themselves on the ground. Children move to achieve mobility and for the sake of it! They don't always have full control of their movements but when they become aware and consciously structure their movements, it becomes dance.

Between the ages of 2 and 5, children are in a sensitive developmental stage and learn quickly. According to the Child Development Institute, parents are encouraged to prepare their kids for starting school. This includes interactions with other peers and basic learning skills. Regardless if it is between the ages of 2 and 5, parents can begin exposing their child to activities at any moment they feel most comfortable.

Children's dance classes are a great activity for kids to release and control the energy they have! Dance is a great exposure to understanding art, culture, and ourselves. It allows a person to gain a sense of power and relief. Not only is it a great form of exercise, but it benefits kids physically, cognitively, socially, and emotionally. The good thing about dance classes is that there are different types of dance and every day is different. We have different styles and age groups here at Dance To EvOLvE.

summer_dance_camp_1-1.jpg

Tap Classes

Tap dancing is a very upbeat and hoppy style of dance. The unique part about this style is that it can be performed without music. If your child enjoys banging on objects or bouncing up and down, tap dance classes are a great way to use their feet like drums!

Ballet Classes    12002109_949039958472821_6478492261576882758_n-1.jpg

Ballet, on the other hand, is more structured and precise. The movements are more graceful and appear effortless. It requires a bit more control and concentration. Ballet dance classes can help children express themselves because every movement has a meaning. It also is a cool way to teach them a new language because French terminology is used!

Hip Hop Classes

HH_Freeze.jpeg

Hip hop classes are fun for kids because not every movement has to be the same as the kid next to them. Kids dance it the way they want and add their own funk to it. This dance style is another way for children to release their energy because it is a high energy dance class.

Kids dance classes are fun because most classes will have themes to enhance creativity and imagination. You can always check out which dance classes develop which skills.

Children enjoy playing and learning new things. Dance classes for kids give them that opportunity to explore and understand their bodies and self. The variety of dance styles and themes make children enjoy every moment they move and groove!

Have your child release their energy in a healthy and beneficial way and sign them up for dance classes today! Let them move freely and express themselves while also having fun! If you are hesitant about what classes to try out or unsure how your child will behave in each class, you can always sign up for a trial class here!

3 Reasons Homeschool Students Should Take Ballet

Posted by Brittany White on Dec 14, 2015 11:00:50 AM

Ballet is a great extracurricular activity for homeschooled students. Due to their flexible schedules, these students have the special opportunity to participate in ballet class any time of the day. Homeschooling also presents its own unique set of challenges, which is often reflected in a child’s behavior and performance. Consider three ways your child can benefit from taking ballet class while in homeschool.

1. Structure

Kids_ballet_class.jpgHomeschooling is a great option for highly motivated students. However, if there is little to no structure in the home, it can have a negative impact on a child’s ability to focus and stay on task. Ballet class can provide the much needed discipline and structure that might otherwise be lacking in the home. Ballet students are taught to show respect for authority, demonstrate proper etiquette in the classroom, and learn responsibility. Being on someone else’s schedule also teaches a homeschooled student time management, a skill that not only helps them with their academics, but even prepares them for the workforce. Check your local dance schools, studios, and recreation centers for midday classes; some of these have created classes specifically with the homeschooler in mind.

2. Socialization

Some homeschooled students have the tendency to be shy or withdrawn; others are hungry for interaction. Ballet class gives homeschooled students the opportunity to socialize with others their age, giving them a sense of community. Many students have forged lifelong friendships based on their mutual love for dance. Through fun, interactiveactivities, ballet students learn to cooperate with others, creating a positive and supportive dynamic in the classroom. Whether a student is learning to be more assertive, or learning how to play well with others, this environment helps homeschooled students develop better social skills in, and outside the classroom.

ballet1.jpg

3. Skill

Every child, homeschooled or not, needs exercise. Ballet class is especially great for homeschool students because it fulfills physical education requirements and gives them a chance to blow off some energy. Contrary to popular belief among many young ones, ballet, however, is not about prancing around in a tutu. Ballet is beautiful, but it’s also very challenging. Ballet technique gives students a full-body workout, enhancing their motor skills, and improving their balance and coordination. Homeschooled students have a particular advantage since they can usually devote more time to practice. When they diligently apply themselves, homeschooled students have the opportunity to accelerate and improve, which in turn, increases their self-confidence.

Ballet, as well as other dance forms, has many physical, mental, and emotional benefits for homeschooled students. It instills principles that help them become better students, children, and members of the community. If you’re considering putting your homeschooler in an extracurricular activity, never underestimate the power of dance.

The Truth about Hip Hop Dance for Tweens and Middle Schoolers

Posted by Brittany White on Dec 9, 2015 2:31:05 PM

We understand that there are stereotypes for some dance classes, especially hip hop for tweens and other ages, but the truth is that they aren't just for booty-poppers! With the right teacher and hip hop class, your dancer can be dancing to the beats in an environment that you are comfortable with!

With the hip hop stereotypes, it can be easy for people to assume there is a certain level of inappropriateness involved. But this does not have to be the case if you are considering the right children's dance studio or middle school hip hop classes. Just like any program you would involve your child in, it is always important to ask some questions to ensure it is the right fit for what you are looking for in a hip hop class for tweens or middle schoolers.

Here is what to look for in tween hip hop classes and what Dance To EvOLvE focuses upon:

-Does the teacher use age appropriate music?
-Is the teacher a positive role model that your dancer can look up to?
-How does the teacher go above and beyond to incorporate life-skills during the hip hop dance class for tweens or in the middle school hip hop dance class?
-Is the movement in the hip hop class age appropriate for children or twees, and is about having fun and creating a positive message? Or is it about something you're not comfortable with as a parent?
-Overall, does the tweens hip hop dance class you are considering seem professional and family friendly?

image-068859-edited

If this is your first time considering enrolling your child or tween in a hip hop class, it is helpful to know a bit more about some developmental benefits of hip hop dance in general. One of the hallmarks of hip hop dance is its use and encouragement of improvisational dance moves, known as "freestyle".  New dancers may find themselves feeling reserved and self conscious when asked to freestyle to hip hop music, but the mark of a great teacher and a great hip hop dance class for tweens (or middle school hip hop dance program) is the ability to encourage the dancer to experiment with new movements and feel the music in a way that feels authentic to them, while keeping with the style of the dance.

We all know that teen years are often fraught with uncertainty and identity searching, with a fair amount of self-doubt thrown in.  Hip hop classes can do wonders to pull kids out of their shells and expose a self-awareness and self-confidence your child never realized they had. Children's and tween's dance classes can be an amazing experience that does wonders for your dancer’s confidence. After participating in the right hip hop dance class, dancers should be sweaty, happy, and self-assured from learning something that presented the right amount of challenge mixed with fun. And then just watch them freestyle confidently with a flair all their own!

Some Other Fun Information About Hip Hop:

Hip hop dance is a category of dance that encompasses a variety of urban styles. The primary styles within this wide range include but are not limited to: breaking, locking and popping. Hip Hop dance is not a studio-evolved style and saw no formal beginning, instead, it was developed on the street in urban neighborhoods.  Hip hop can come in many different styles with a variety of music...find an age appropriate hip hop class for your dancer! Check out our kid's hip hop classes available for ages 2-12.

  • Black and Latino Americans were the creators of uprock and breaking in the Bronx of New York, whereas Black Americans in California created popping, roboting, boogalo and locking - or the funk style.
  • Hip Hop dance became widely known in the 1970s after the first professional street-based crews formed in the USA.
  • In the 1980s, hip hop social dancing started to develop, with novelty and fad dances such as the Roger Rabbit, the Cabbage Patch, and the Worm becoming widely popularized.  Who can forget those fun dances?

What makes a good dance teacher in a kids dance school?

Posted by Dance To EvOLvE Team on Nov 22, 2014 8:57:00 AM

There is a real difference between being a good dancer, a good dance teacher and a good kids dance teacher. Too often, people think that because some are good competitive dancers, they will be good teachers or even good kids dance teachers as well. That is not necessarily the case. Little do they know that dancing is one skill, teaching kids how to dance is another. Young kids and toddlers are not like average adults who can understand most of the things that teachers convey, or express what they feel towards the content they are learning. To successfully teach children dancing, dance teachers in every kids dance school has to develop their own methods of catching little dancers’ attention, delivering their skills effectively, taking good care of each students and so on. Obviously the criteria for a good teacher will depend on the kids dance school’s philosophy and age group that they are teaching. But in general, here are some key qualities that are imperative to any kids dance teachers and are also what we look for when hiring and mentoring our Dance To EvOLvE teachers.

teachers of kids dance schoolProfessionalism: Kids dance school teachers need to be able to answer parents’ questions and communicate important information. They need to be reliable to be at class consistently and to be on time.

Knowledgable About Dance Development: The instructors in childrens dance schools need to know when students are ready to advance. It is crucial that they do not teach above the student’s age or level if their muscles and strength are not ready. Different levels of expectation should be applied to different ages of little dancers. For example, for our Magical Munchkins tap dancing class for 2-years-old toddlers, teachers would expect just the movement of legs and feet from them. However, if it were Start Shiners tap dancing class for 5 years old, the teachers would require the little ones to actually make the sound from dance moves.

Truly Passionate: Teaching in a kids dance school should be a true delight for the instructors. Great teachers enjoy the art of teaching dance, and enjoy being in the studio as a teacher watching their students grow. Their enthusiasm towards dance and teaching is contagious and will definitely affect and shape the little dancers’ attitude in dancing as well. Plus, teachers must truly love this age group, no faking it with a 3-year old.

Good Class Management: One of the biggest characteristics of great dance teachers that wekids dance teacher kids dance school see missing in a lot of great dancers is the ability to manage a class. The little dancers need to stay engaged and focused in a way that makes class fun while keeping them safe. Class management is imperative to a successful, efficient and productive class in a dance school for children. This is an acquired skill and should definitely be continually watched so the teacher can improve.

Good Preparation: A unique thing that our kids dance school’s teachers are required to do in order to maintain high quality classes is a lesson plan to ensure that teachers are not just ‘winging’ it week to week. All our teachers, for all ages and levels, also must complete teacher shadowing and a teacher development workshop once a year. Teachers can learn so much from each other and it is important to watch others to keep those creative juices flowing.

kids dance school kids dance teacherEvery kids dance school has different sets of criteria about choosing teaching staff. The teachers are what differentiate or ‘make’ a kids dance school. Dance To EvOLvE has some of the best teachers around but they are all different and have different teaching methods. Some teachers are higher energy and louder and some have a much calmer quality to them. Neither of these types is better than the other, but just different and can have different effects on your little dancer. Thus it is also important to find out who is the right teacher for your little dancers. The first thing parents should do is to visit the website of the kids dance school they select and look at the description of its dance teachers. Pay attention to their education background, dance experience and personality, which is revealed in the way they introduce themselves. Besides reading the introduction of teachers, parents can also try visiting a kids dance teacher’s class and watch to see if the class seems organized and well run or if the little ones have enough time dancing and taking breaks. Talking to teachers directly after class will be helpful too. Prepare specific questions about little ones such as what the teachers will do if their children are not following instructions.

Overall, picking the right dance teacher for your child is essential to the kind of dance experience your little ones will have in the future. A great, skillful teacher with the qualities mentioned above will guide the little dancers to develop the same passion towards dance he or she has already discovered.

Local Dance Classes for Preschoolers & Kindergarteners

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Aug 26, 2014 10:13:00 PM

Searching for age appropriate local dance classes for preschoolers can prove to be a struggle at times. You want your preschooler to be challenged in their dance class but not so much so that they feel overwhelmed. Luckily, Dance to EvOLvE has locations in San Diego, Chicago, and Seattle where we offer a wide variety of kids dance classes. If you are in another area, we are here to provide some helpful tips when looking for an age appropriate dance class for kindergarteners.

What Are The Dance Classes Offered?

local dance classes for preschoolersWhen looking for a local dance class for preschoolers check out the current kids dance classes offered. Are there enough classes for a variety of ages?  Do the dance classes accommodate to the appropriate ages? It is important that the dance studio offers preschool dance classes for specific, target age groups such as 4-5 or 5-6 so that the kids are challenged as well as benefitting fully from the others around them. You wouldn’t want your 5 year old doing the same activities as the 13 year olds!

Next, look at what types of kids dance classes are offered at your local dance studio.  Are only creative movement classes offered? What about hip hop for preschoolers? Finding the right local dance class for your kindergartener is crucial as it will allow them to grow and succeed.  Popular dance classes for kindergarteners are hip-hop classes, ballet classes and combination classes that include a mixture of tap and ballet.

What Piques Your Preschoolers Interest?

One of the most important things you can do is ask your preschooler what it is they arelocal dance class for kindergarteners interested in! If they say "fighting like a ninja" take a look at local dance studios that offer hip-hop dance classes for ages 4-6 years. If the answer is "I wanna be princess", preschool ballet classes might be a better bet. Once you have narrowed down the style, then you can look at the professionalism of the studio, the cleanliness and the philosophy.  Does the studio place a high emphasis on ensuring the preschoolers feel welcome? What about laughs and smiles? An age appropriate local dance class for preschoolers will have the perfect balance of fun, learning and challenge.

Are The Music And Moves Age Appropriate?

Another important factor to consider when finding an age appropriate dance class for kindergarteners is the dance moves and the dance music. Not only do the dance moves need to be appropriate but they should also be catered towards the age of your preschooler. For a younger age, advanced ballet technique should not be introduced just yet. Rather the dance class for kindergarteners should focus on introducing the style of dance as well as learning very basic introductory moves. The dance music also needs to be tailored towards the age of the preschooler. Frozen's "Let it Go" is a is sure to pease a 5 year old, but older children might be over it and on to, heaven forbid, 'tween music. (Bieber anyone?)  To ensure the music and dance moves are appropriate, take a trial class at a local kids dance studio or try a few different ones before settling.  There is nothing wrong with taking the time to find the perfect dance class for your preschooler.
