7 Tips To Prepare For Summer Dance Camp

Posted by Brittany White on Feb 4, 2017 4:48:39 PM

 summer camps

Summer dance camps are one of the most exciting parts about being on summer break! However, for many, it is also the first time kids are separated from their family. We understand that summer camp might be a new experience and that it might make both dancers and parents a bit uneasy. So we’ve compiled few tips and tricks to help put your mind at ease and to get you and your little one prepared for a fun-filled summer at camp!

1) Have A Positive Attitude

The most important part about making yourself and your camper more comfortable with summer camp is to have a positive attitude! If you don’t think camp will be a positive experience for your child, neither will he/she. Remain positive, give him/her a pep up talk in the morning if the nerves kick in. You can also offer words of encouragement and remind your camper of how much fun camp is! For young campers, reminding them that attending camp is definitely something for “big boys” and “big girls” will also make a huge difference. So turn that frown upside down and head to camp with a positive mindset!

2) Share Your Own Camp Experiences!

Did you go to camp as a child? If you did, don’t forget to show your pictures of yourself from when you were a camper! Explain to them how much fun you had, how many friends you made, your favorite summer camp memories, and all the neat things you learned! Your summer camp tips will excite your children for their own camp while at the same time easing their nerves!

3) Head To Camp With A Friend!

Having one of your child’s friends attend summer camp with your child will comfort your camper because they will know someone as soon as they arrive to camp! Not only will this strengthen your child’s current friendship because of these new and fun experiences, but it will reduce your child’s anxiety significantly! (especially if your child is shy!) Having a camp buddy will help your child venture out of his/her comfort zone and help add new kids into their friendship circle!

4) Learn About The Camp!

Learning about the camp in advance will most likely ease your nerves! Go online and research the names and faces of the camp staff. You can also get a better idea of what to expect by reviewing camp videos, brochures, etc. which can all be found on the website of the summer camp your child is attending. Reading over camp safety policies or reviewing safety with the camp provider will also make you and your child feel a lot better if you’re nervous about the big day!

5) Packing For Camp!

We know that as a parent you might feel obligated to pack every single thing you can think of. But don’t worry, you really don’t need to pack too much! An extra change of clothes in a bag is always handy (just to be safe in case of accidents). Don’t forget to pack healthy snacks such as fruits and veggies for breaks (nothing too sugary!). Water bottles are a must, you can even bring one reusable bottle so your child only has to carry one bottle. It’ll also make their bag a bit lighter. A list of emergency contacts is important for your child to leave with the camp providers just in case of an emergency. Lastly, be sure to label everything with your child’s first and last name just in case he/she loses any of their belongings!

6) Stay Composed!

Resisting the urge to tell your child over and over how much you will miss him/her will make summer camp a lot easier for you and your child. When you constantly tell them that you will miss them, it increases the risk of separation anxiety, especially when you’re saying your goodbyes. Instead, recognize that it is just a few hours a day, and your child will be having so much fun so there won’t be time to get homesick! Give your child a hug and a kiss and send them on their way!

7) Give Yourself Extra Time On Check-In Day!

Draw-an-Old-Fashioned-Alarm-Clock-Step-15.jpg

Understand that the first day of summer camp can be a bit hectic, so allow yourself plenty of extra
time to get checked in. Make sure you arrive early to talk to the camp staff, get your child checked in, take pictures, and say your goodbyes for the day. You won’t regret giving yourself plenty of time to get all of these things done without feeling rushed!

April Fool's Day Pranks You Can Play On Your Kids

Posted by Brittany White on Mar 29, 2016 10:27:44 AM

April Fool’s Day is one of the most overlooked holidays. I mean a holiday where you’re allowed to prank people all day? Even your kids? There are so many different practical jokes to play on your kids that will get a laugh out of them, and only a little bit of embarrassment. Here are a few ideas…

Food Pranks

There are so many ways you can prank your kids on April Fools Day with their food. One easy, but great idea is to fill up their cup with jello instead of juice. When they go to take a sip from the straw, they will be so confused! And, it’s a win for them too because then it turns into a yummy snack!

Jello.jpg

Food dye is a wonderful invention. You can put food dye in just about anything, and get some startled looks from your kids when they realize the milk is suddenly blue. Grab some dye from your local store and go crazy!

As they’re getting ready for their dance lesson, prepare a nice cereal snack for them. Make sure you make it a few hours early though, because you’re gonna need to stick it in the freezer for a while. Imagine their face when they try to get a big spoonful of Lucky Charms, only to realize it’s frozen.

                                       0038000128470_CL_version_type_large.jpeg

Mess with their Mind Pranks

These April Fool’s Day jokes will make your kids take a second look. If you have a good 20 minutes to spare, turn as much as you can in your house upside down. This means pictures, clocks, chairs, toys, anything you can think of! This will for sure throw them off.

When you pick up your kids from their dance school on April Fool's Day, make sure you have a crazy wig on! Whether it’s a hot pink afro, or a rockin’ mullet, you’ll be looking great and your kids will be the perfect amount of embarrassed in front of their dance friends.

Another funny idea would be to swap out their dance clothes with a larger size, causing them to think they have shrunk! This means their leotard, tutu, shoes, etc. Plus, you can use the bigger clothes later on!

Chicago

For those of you in Chicago, there are plenty of ways to use the city to your advantage on this holiday. If your child is a big fan of the Cubs, convince them their Chicago dance school got moved to Wrigley Field for the day! This one may cause some disappointment, but could still be funny as long as they have a good sense of humor. Same goes for the Soldier Stadium if they’re more of a Bears Fan.

                        wrigley-day-040512-sg-01-jpg.jpg

San Diego

There are endless possibilities for practical jokes in San Diego. One idea would be to convince them your family is going to be leaving the San Diego sun and moving to a much colder city in the middle of nowhere.

Snow_Landscape__.jpg

Another good one would be to tell them that they are unfortunately going to miss participating in the recital with their San Diego dance school, because you are going out of town. If you’ve ever been to recital before, you know that this is not something to be missed.

Now that you have all of these ideas in your mind, it’s time to get to work! Just remember that April Fool’s Day is supposed to be fun and be a day full of extra laughter! Create some more memories with your kids by pranking them in a way they will never forget, so they can pass the tradition on to their family one day!

How To Choose a Summer Camp

Posted by Brittany White on Feb 29, 2016 5:12:14 PM

With summer just around the corner, time is ticking and the pressure is on to find the right summer camp in San Diego for your kids! There are so many summer camp ideas for kids in San Diego...But don’t worry! You’re not alone and we have put a helpful guide together to help you choose a summer camp!

1.  The first and most important thing is the staff:

Every parent is worried about whom they will be leaving their children with all day and that is a completely normal and important concern. That is why it is important to look for a camp which hires experienced staff that will make you and your child feel comfortable. The more experience the better! Try and look for staff that is child friendly and will help your kids feel welcome when they come to camp alone. Other than the friendliness, make sure the camp leaders have been thoroughly inspected by the organization and have passed a security check. If you aren't sure as to what reputable staff looks like, take a look at the EvOLvE list of friendly teachers and read about how we select our awesome staff!

Summer_Camp_Arts

2.  Look at the goals:

When doing your summer camp planning, it is important to look for the goals that they have set for the children! Make sure summer is not only a time for fun but for learning as well. The best camps will provide a variety of activities for your children which will enhance your child’s learning skills, and improve their social skills along with teamwork! Look for a kids summer camp which really emphasizes the skills you would like your child to develop and is supportive in your child’s dreams!

3.  How hard do they push?

It seems like a weird question at first but it’s definitely one of some importance. During a day camp your child will be kept busy with different sorts of activities. Although these activities can be healthy and beneficial, it is important to not push children too hard and allow them plenty of breaks. Ask about the amount of breaks they will be getting throughout the day, how many potty breaks, snack breaks, etc. What about downtime? Is there a time in the schedule when the kids can take a break from all of the commotion and listen to a story or take a short nap? Even with just a day camp, kids might get overworked and tired so be sure to check if the kids summer camp you’re looking at provides the right combination of fun and relaxation. For a great reference on how a camp schedule should look like. Check out San Diego's EvOlvE's camp schedules and Chicago's camp schedules SummerCampSanDiego

4.  Communication

As a parent, it is not pleasant being left out of the loop and not knowing what your child is up to all day. Make sure that the camp you are looking at supports open communication between parents, staff and children. Also, as a parent, you want to stay included in the summer camp planning and have access to any information about your child at all times. It makes you feel comfortable and safe leaving your child in their hands every day.

5.  Fun!

Last but certainly not least, ask yourself if your child will really enjoy this camp! Don’t settle for an average summer camp. Summer is a time for adventure and fun, a time to let your child’s curiosity soar. Dance to EvOLvE prides itself on providing children opportunity to have an amazing time learning and creating with their wonderful teacher. Kids love it and it's not only fun but also beneficial for them. So talk with your children and find out exactly what they want and sign them up for a camp, such as a summer dance camp in San Diego that will provide them with a variety of activities, challenging and fun, and one that they will miss when they are finished! This will save a huge hassle of having to switch camps or rearrange plans!

Make the most of this summer and be smart with your decisions! We hope you consider some of these questions when searching for a summer camp in San Diego.

Dance to EvOLvE has proudly been a part of this wonderful city for eight years, and we are so excited to continue our involvement in San Diego. In addition to TOPGUN, this air station is also home to the Miramar Air Show! This is one of San Diego's most popular events. At this show, visitors have the rare oppportunity of seeing the talented Blue Angels, the Navy's top pilots. Our new location, held at Flip Force, is literally right across the street from this Air Station. How Cool!

Another great thing about our Miramar location is the surrounding shops! While your kids are in class, get a membership at the 24 Hour right down the street and get a workout in of your own! Or, UTC mall is only a short 10 minute drive away!  After class, grab some pizza at That's Amore or get some grocery shopping done at Miramar Cash and Carry!  Flip Force is also centrally located in San Diego between the 805 and the 15. This results in easy access from anywhere in the city. Miramar is a wonderful are and we are so excited to add to the list of kids activities in Miramar.

Just a hop, skip and a jump away is Mission Beach, one of the many beautiful beaches in San Diego, where there’s lots of space to set up camp for the day, have a picnic, a sunset bonfire, and watch the SeaWorld fireworks on summer nights. There’s a bike trail, and another off leash dog park too, Fiesta Island. Bring a flashlight if you go to Fiesta later in the day, it gets dark early nowadays!

Closer to Point Loma? A five minute drive from Liberty Station is the Pearl Hotel, where the Dive-In Theater is offered. Every Tuesday, guests can gather around or lounge in the vintage oyster shaped pool, and enjoy kid friendly favorites like Elf, Frozen, or a Christmas Story. It is recommended that you make a table reservation for your family in advance, and while tableside viewing is free, pool access requires a drink purchase. Showtime is 8:00 PM!

It’s a well known fact that food tastes better when it’s free. For tons of free samples, check out the Little Italy Mercato Famer's Market every Saturday morning! One of the largest weekly farmer's markets in San Diego, free samples of delicious fresh prepared food and farmer’s finest fruits, good music, family friendly arts and crafts for the little ones, are spread out over several blocks. This is also a great way to expose your kids to different fruits and vegetables without having to prepare a whole meal!

                                                        A most plentiful bounty.

For the cheese enthusiast, go tasting at Venissimo, where delicious cheeses from around the world are sold. This is a great way to discover new ingredients for your grilled cheese sandwiches, without breaking the bank! We all know kids love cheese, so let them sample some more exotic varieties like manchego, chimay, or little boy blue.

Got a pair of binoculars at home? Take the kids to the Torrey Pines State Nature Reserve, and spend the day doing some bird watching! An extra fun twist, bring some colored pencils and a sketchbook along, and take turns drawing the colorful birds you’ll see. All done bird watching for the day? Take a hike! No, really, this place is great for hiking, and has some seriously spectacular views.

If you’re looking for some springtime landscaping inspiration, the San Diego Botanical Gardens have got you covered. On the first Tuesday of every month, free admission is offered, and family friendly bonus: if you have more than four people in your car, the parking charge is waived too. Score! There's lots of green space to run around and play in, as well as tons of rare and exotic flowers to ooh and ahh at, so this is bound to be a hit with kids and adults alike!

Looking for a park experience that just keeps on giving? Sunset Park near San Elijo offers 19 acres of free kid friendly activities, with walking trails, lots of green space to run around, playgrounds aplenty, a soccer field, volleyball and basketball facilities, a picnic area, and a dog park, you’d be hard pressed to run out of things to do here.Kids_activities_Sunset_Park_San_Elijo.jpg

Last, but certainly not the least, there are free children’s dance classes happening in all of these areas! In Grantville, at the Party Fitness Studio, in San Elijo, at the San Elijo Park & Recreation Center, in Liberty Station at the new Kid Ventures, and in Mission Hills, at RISE Studio. All of these locations feature our EvOLving Dance Days, where our instructors offer free classes! This is a chance for your kids to try out several types of dance for free! We will be collecting donations benefiting the Rady Children's Hospital of San Diego. The minimum suggested donation is $3.00.

And feel free to schedule a risk free trial dance class at any of our locations, so you can see what kind of dance your little one likes best!

North County is sometimes overlooked due to not being at the heart of San Diego, but that does not mean it isn’t an excellent option for dancing and attractions. Why not check out the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad with your little one or have a blast with the new added features at Legoland.  Another attraction to North County is the dancing features.  Check out Encinitas dance classes as well as Carlsbad dance classes. Your child can have a blast dancing to the music they learned how to make at the Museum of Making Music.

Logan Square Chicago

Logan Square is full of some amazing features as well as vibrant dancing opportunities for your child. Catch a movie at Logan theater where you can find kids movies for only one dollar Tuesday's and Wednesday's at 10am. Kids Dance Classes in San Diego - New Locations!

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Aug 12, 2014 9:56:00 AM

Dancing is everywhere we look. On the streets, in the kitchen, on the T.V., with so much dancing around us, it can still be hard to find proper kids dance classes in San Diego.  Location is everything! What fun is a kids dance class if it is too difficult or too far to get to? It’s also important to take into consideration commute time on different times of the day. Crossing San Diego at rush hour?  Forget about it!  With location being so important, EvOLvE has made it a mission to provide convenient kids dance studios in fun, accessible areas. Read on to find out more about our up and coming dance locations.

kids dance Studio4S Ranch local dance classes

We are happy to announce that we have a new kids dance class location in 4S Ranch for your convenience! This location is in proximity to a lot of neighboring communities such as Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch and Del Sur. 4S Ranch local dance classes range from tap, ballet, hip hop and combination classes for all ages two through twelve.  An added bonus of our new 4S Ranch dance location is the summer movies in community parks nearby such as Patriot Park, and summer concerts where you and your toddler can practice new dance moves! We ensure that our kids dance studios are in locations that are not only convenient for you but are safe and kid friendly for your dancing superstar.

Carmel Mountain local dance classes

Another place where you can get moving and grooving is our Carmel Mountain location. Similar to 4Skids dance class Ranch, Carmel Mountain is also near several popular communities with lots of fun entertainment to go along with the dancing fun. Our Carmel Mountain local dance class is currently offering a tap/ballet combo Thursday afternoons during the summertime. This popular class introduces movement, coordination and a fun jazz dance day once a month for those who like to switch things up from time to time. Carmel Mountain Ranch also features summer movies in their local parks and will occasionally offer a free kids dance lesson before the movie starts, lead by one of our very own EvOLvE teachers.  Get all the wiggles and jiggles out before the movie starts and your toddler should be good to go for the better part of the movie!

Once you have decided on the best area for your toddler dance lessons in San Diego, you can begin to look at what studios in your preferred area offer; what the teachers teach, background on the studio and age appropriateness of the skills taught. A good kids dance studio will love children, but more importantly know how to speak to and motivate them.  Teaching children is much different than teach adults, and teaching toddlers is much different than teaching 8 year olds, as many of us know from first hand experience!  When you do a trial class, ask yourself: was the music appropriate for the age group? Were the skills challenging, yet achievable? Was the teacher patient?  Was the facility clean and safe?  Last, but not least, ask your child if he or she had fun!  Did your toddler experience lots of laughs and smiles in class? The right dance studio should have the perfect combination of learning and laughter to fully benefit your toddler.

Your convenience matters to us, which is why we provide several easily accessible locations to make dancing a fun and easy activity for you and your toddler. Along with finding a good location for your child's dance lessons comes finding a reliable, trustworthy studio with great teachers who want to further your toddler’s growth. After all, your superstar deserves the best! For more information on Dance To EvOLvE's many locations, check our website.  For updated information, as well as any fun activities or upcoming events, follow us on twitter!
