Beat The Heat With Your Kids This Summer

Posted by Dance To EvOLvE Team on Jul 31, 2017 11:22:38 AM

Its mid-July and almost everyday heat records are being shattered! This means that kids are getting bored and tired especially as the temperatures continue to rise. So it’s important to have back-up plans to beat the heat and kid’s summer boredom! So here’s a list of some of our favorite creative ways to stay cool!

Public Pools

If you aren’t lucky enough to have your own pool or complex pool, Rec center pools often allow kids to come and free swim. Some of them even have a splash pad, waterslide or water playground for the kids. Like a little mini-Soak City but way more convenient and cost effective! Overall it’s a cheap and great way to access a pool! Just don’t forget the sunscreen! While you are at the rec center you can also take...

Dance Classes

Get out of the sun and get your kids grooving! Dance classes are a fun inside activity that still lets your kids get some exercise and get a break from the sun. There is such a variety of styles, from Hip-Hop to Ballet, that every dancer can find a class that they love! Start with a drop-in then maybe even sign up for a whole session! Make Your Own Popsicles

All you need is your favorite fruit juice and some Popsicle molds and in a few hours you have got a delicious ice-cold treat! Popsicle molds are relatively cheap and can be bought at Rite-Aid, Walmart and off Amazon! Our favorite juices to use are orange, mango and guava. If you are feeling fancy you can even add some fruit! It’s a great way for your kids to get a little creative and get to customize their treat!

Water Games

Another great inexpensive way to cool off but still be playing outside is to play some water games! These are some summer camp classics that kids love! Some basic ones are water balloon tossing contests where you get further and further away from your partner! Or just a water balloon fight if you don’t mind picking up all the balloon remnants after! Another great game for littler kids is duck-duck-goose featuring a soaked sponge; as you go around you hold the sponge and let it drip onto the heads of the ducks then you squeeze it out over the chosen goose! Our final game is a relay where the kids fill up a cup using only a bucket of water and their hair! The kids have to run to the bucket of water, dunk their head in, then run back and squeeze out their hair into the cup that you are holding next to their line! This game works best with a larger number of kids and its great for girls with longer hair!

Outdoor Art Projects

You know how kids love to paint on themselves or each other? Well this is an activity where that is the goal! Using non-toxic water-soluble paint masterpieces on each other then to clean up spray each other with the hose! Its artistic, creative and a great way to cool off!Source: http://dguides.com/images/sandiego/attractions/mission-beach.jpg

Beach Day

If you are lucky enough to live near a beach like our San Diego families, another way to beat the heat is to have a beach day! Make it a day trip by bringing a picnic lunch and plenty of water! Also pack the boogie boards, surfboards, and any other activity that your kids like to do in the ocean! Just remember to stock up on the sunscreen, and bring an umbrella!

Summer Camps

Although summer camps are often outside, there are many that are actually mainly inside! For example science, cooking, sewing, and dance camps. Depending on the camp your child will get some exercise, learn new skills, build on old ones, explore their passions and have fun! Especially if you are a working parent these are great to keep your kids entertained all day long! Check out some of our dance camps here: http://www.dancetoevolve.com/san-diego/summer-dance-camps

Rock Climbing Gym

Another fun activity that is indoors and air-conditioned is a rock climbing gym! Many places have lessons for kids and kid friendly climbs. It is amazing exercise, a mental challenge and it’s so incredible when your child reaches the top for the first time! Overall it’s a great way to get out of the sun and try something new!

See a Movie

Seeing a movie seems like a nighttime activity, but in the summer when it is blazing hot it’s a great way to have fun indoors! If you want a less high-energy activity then this is a great option. So mix it up by seeing a movie during the day instead of at night!

Go to a Museum

Summer does not have to be all play all the time! Museums are a great way for kids to learn and stay smart over the summer in a fun and air conditioned way! There is also such a variety from art, history to science that all kids can find a museum that they love! Chicago is ripe with museums and San Diego has some great ones in Balboa Park.  Make it a fun and educational day that your kids will never forget!

Don’t let summer boredom and the heat get the best of you! Keep the kids cool and entertained all summer long by trying these activities!

Summer Dance Class Themes with Dance to EvOLvE

Posted by Helen McCarthy on May 27, 2017 8:14:01 PM

Summer is fast approaching - crazy right!? With the kids home all day without school you are going to want activities that keep them active, involved, and social. Luckily, at Dance To EvOLvE we have been hard at work planning themed weeks to keep our our current kids dance classes fun and fresh this summer!

What better way to kickstart the summer than to dance outside? The summer themes begin with Dance Outside Week, where dancers get to enjoy the beautiful weather that comes with the new season (or lack thereof at our San Diego locations). Teachers often choose to spend the games portion of class outside, or even teach their entire class in the fresh air! These activities will be in safe, shady areas, but be sure that your dancers bring plenty of water on this day so that they stay hydrated!

The fun outdoors doesn't end there – get ready for anything and everything bubbles on Bubble Day! Teachers might add an under the sea mermaid twist to the theme or opt for a more whimsical take on the idea. During game time dancers will have an opportunity to venture outdoors to play with all types of bubbles. From large bubbles they can chase with friends to small bubble wands they can twirl around with, your little one will have many opportunities to find creative ways to incorporate bubbles into movement and dance.

During Beach Week we bring the tropical mindset to the studio! Our San Diego students are already familiar with the sandy beaches by the ocean, so this is a fun way to incorperate their favorite summertime activities into dance class. Dancers at our Chicago locations will get to travel to more coastal shores without hopping on a plane. On beach days dancers get to dress in their favorite beach-going attire – a super fun way to switch up their normal dance class routine. Beach themed games will be set up during the allotted game time. Sure to be a blast!

Families, you will get a chance to put on your dancing shoes and learn a few steps from your young dancer during Parents Get Involved Day! This class is all about being a part of the Dance To EvOLvE family, so you definitely do not want to miss out. You can look forward to some partner dancing with your little one, and they will love to show you what they have been learning in class. Older dancers will also have the opportunity to teach their families some new moves they learned – a super fun activity for all participants that is guaranteed to improve dance parties at home.

Switch Up The Style Day is a great way to expose our students to different dance styles that they might not have learned before! For example, classes during this week could potentially incorporate some hip-hop moves into a ballet/tap class. Teachers might choose to change up small sections of the routines throughout the class or simply change the entire class to a different style. The possibilities are endless with this theme, and we can’t wait to see the unique ideas our teachers come up with!

The Dance to EvOLvE team is excited to experience the creativity and laughter that our themed summer classes bring – from enjoying the great outdoors, to fun with costumes and bubbles, to seeing YOU bust some moves on the dance floor! Be sure to keep your eye of for these special classes on the announcement page so that your dancer is a part of the fun!

If you are looking for other ways to keep your little one active this summer, look no further than our Dance To EvOLvE summer camps! We are hosting a wide range of themes and locations this summer that are a perfect way to creatively focus their energy, keep their minds active, and build friendships outside of school. Go check them out!

Activities To Do With Your Kids In La Jolla

Posted by Brittany White on Jul 20, 2016 11:15:56 PM

San Diego is filled with many activities and sights to see. One of the most popular cities and most tourist driven places in San Diego is La Jolla. La Jolla is filled with many activities to do with your family, from surfing at the beach to dance classes for toddlers or kids in UTC! Here are some things you can do while you are in the city of La Jolla, California:

  1. Head to La Jolla Shores
La Jolla Shores is a very popular place to go because of its beach town feel and its pristine beach. There are many surf shacks and gift shops to explore so you can never get bored! Kellogg Park is located near the shores and it has a playground so your kids can run around and play. La Jolla Shores is a great place if you love to surf because there are plenty of waves you can catch. If you are not a surfer, that is okay because it is also a perfect place to relax and listen to the sound of the crashing waves. And if you want to see some wildlife head next door to La Jolla Cove which is home to local Sea Lions. You can go scuba diving, snorkeling, the options are limitless!

  1.  Visit the Birch Aquarium
The Birch Aquarium is visited by an average of 435,000 people per year and is known for their prestigious Oceanography studies. You can see up to 380 species of ocean life while you’re there and you can have a chance to feed some animals. There are fun summer camps, school programs, and aquarium classes they can take! The aquarium is a great place to learn about what kind of animals live in our oceans and how we can protect them and learn more about them.

  1.  Go to The Salk Institute
The Salk Institute is a school of biological research located in La Jolla, right next to the Torrey Pines Gliderport. Not an obvious destination for kids in La Jolla, this institute is known not only for its research, but it is also known for its unique architecture and breathtaking view. You are free to roam around outside the labs and offices and enjoy the beauty of the campus. Be sure to grab lunch there and watch the paragliders roam the sky as you look out onto the ocean right on the edge of campus.

  1.  See a play at the La Jolla Playhouse
This is a professional theater on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. There are many plays that are available to see at the La Jolla Playhouse; some professional, and some put together by kids, teenagers, and college students. This theater was awarded America's Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1993 by the Tony Awards! Theater, like dance, is a creative way of storytelling, which is something your kids will love! It is a beautiful theater made in 1947 and is a great place to check out if you are in La Jolla.
