7 Tips To Prepare For Summer Dance Camp for Kids

Posted by Brittany White on May 23, 2016 3:11:52 PM

summer camps

Summer dance camps are one of the best parts about being on summer break for many kids! However, we know it might be the first time you and your kids are separated during summer vacation. We also understand that summer camp might be a new experience and that it might make both dancers and parents a bit uneasy. So we’ve compiled a few tips and tricks to help put your mind at ease and to get you and your little one prepared for a fun-filled summer at camp!

1) Have A Positive Attitude

The most important part about making yourself and your camper more comfortable with summer camp is to have a positive attitude! If you don’t think camp will be a positive experience for your child, neither will he/she. Remain positive, give him/her a pep up talk in the morning if the nerves kick in. You can also offer words of encouragement and remind your camper of how much fun camp is! For young campers, reminding them that attending camp is definitely something for “big boys” and “big girls” will also make a huge difference. So turn that frown upside down and head to camp with a positive mindset!

2) Share Your Own Camp Experiences!

Did you go to camp as a child? If you did, don’t forget to show your dancer pictures of yourself from when you were a camper! Explain to them how much fun you had, how many friends you made, your favorite summer camp memories, and all the neat things you learned! Your summer camp tips will excite your children for their own camp and while easing their nerves!

3) Head To Camp With A Friend!

Having one of your child’s friends attend summer camp with your child will comfort your camper because they will know someone as soon as they arrive to camp! Not only will this strengthen your child’s current friendship because of these new and fun experiences, but it will reduce your child’s anxiety significantly! (especially if your child is shy!) Having a camp buddy will help your child venture out of his/her comfort zone and help add new kids into their friendship circle!

4) Learn About The Camp!

Learning about the camp in advance will most likely ease your nerves! Go online and research the names and faces of the camp staff. You can also get a better idea of what to expect by reviewing camp videos, brochures, etc. which can all be found on the website of the summer camp your child is attending. Reading over camp safety policies or reviewing safety with the camp provider will definitely make you and your child feel a lot better if you’re nervous about the big day!

5) Packing For Camp!

We know that as a parent you might feel obligated to pack every single thing you can think of. But don’t worry, you really don’t need to pack too much! An extra change of clothes in a bag is always handy (just to be safe in case of accidents). Don’t forget to pack healthy snacks such as fruits and veggies for breaks (nothing too sugary!). Water bottles are a must, you can even bring one reusable bottle so your child only has to carry one bottle. It’ll also make their bag a bit lighter. A list of emergency contacts is important for your child to leave with the camp providers just in case of an emergency. Lastly, be sure to label everything with your child’s first and last name just in case he/she loses any of their belongings!

6) Stay Composed!

Resisting the urge to tell your child over and over how much you will miss him/her will make summer camp a lot easier for you and your child. When you constantly tell them that you will miss them, it increases the risk of separation anxiety, especially when you’re saying your goodbyes. Instead, recognize that it is just a few hours a day, and your child will be having so much fun so there won’t be time to get homesick! Give your child a hug and a kiss and send them on their way!

7) Give Yourself Extra Time On Check-In Day!

Draw-an-Old-Fashioned-Alarm-Clock-Step-15.jpgUnderstand that the first day of summer camp can be a bit hectic, so allow yourself plenty of extra
time to get checked in. Make sure you arrive early to talk to the camp staff, get your child checked in, take pictures, and say your goodbyes for the day. You won’t regret giving yourself plenty of time to get all of these things done without feeling rushed!

Local dance studios offer a variety of summer options. These summer dance camps offer music and creative movement classes, choreography, and teach kids different dance styles such as hip-hop, tap, and ballet! Start your research and be sure to get registered early because camps fill up fast! Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Jul 10, 2014 10:39:00 AM

Keeping your child active and engaged can be challenging at times, especially in these summer months. However, kids dance classes and summer day camps are a great way to make the process easier. Not only will physical activity make your child healthier; it will also improve self esteem and confidence. Check out some of the reasons these activities can keep your child moving and grooving.

Summer Camp: A great tool for engagement!

Kids summer camps are one of many ways to keep your child active.  First and foremost, they offer new and exciting activities for your little one to try such as a karate, swimming or dance camp where your child can participate in learning new skills, making art projects and fun games all in one. These activities enable your child to open their minds and learn new skills such as social and educational ones all while having loads of fun. In summer day camps like these, your kid will have the opportunity to fully express themselves and maybe even find a new passion or hobby to engage in.

Secondly, by participating in these summer camps, your child will not only activate their minds but will keep them activated and engaged by having to follow important directions and dance classes, kids summer camp, summer day camplearn these new skills they are presented with.  When the learning session is done for the day, summer day camps will almost always involve a craft time or a free time where your little one can engage his/her creative side or just spend time with newfound friends.  This activation of the mind and learning of new activities will prove to increase your child's self esteem; whether they are enjoying new friends or have just mastered a new skill, confidence levels will raise immensely.  Along with this constant engagement comes constant physical activity.  Rather your little one is walking from task to task, participating in obstacle courses or busting a move with a new friend; Summer day camp will ensure that your child is active and participating in some sort of way.

Dance classes: A powerful encouragement tool

Not quite ready to have your child go to a summer day camp?  No problem! Classes are another excellent option to keep your child energetic and focused. This shorter amount of time will ensure engagement and involvement in classes such as kids dance classes.  These classes such as hip hop or tap dance class will result in active learning. As fun as it is to take our favorite class over and over again, taking a different variety of classes can be extremely beneficial.  By taking all different types of classes, your child will not only develop different gross motor skills but will also develop a willingness to try new things.

dance classes, summer day camp, dance campsAlthough it can be scary for our little one’s to try something new, it is rewarding to them in more ways than one.  Engaging in new idea’s and activities will enhance your child’s self assurance and confidence by proving to them that they can accomplish anything they set their mind on.  The outcome may just be a new dream for your superstar.

FIVE REASONS TO TRY A HIP HOP SUMMER DANCE CAMP

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Jun 27, 2014 9:40:00 AM

How many parents out there are starting to think about summer camps and vacations?! Summer is filled with so many different options for families to explore. It’s a great time for kids to try new things for as little or as long as they want and find interests that may last through the next year and beyond! So when choosing a summer camp for your kid’s, give them a break from the sun and heat and consider a summer hip hop camp! A Summer Hip Hop Dance camp allows kids to try a fun and modern genre of dance, work quickly towards a performance, and learn in a fun, relaxing environment. Here are some reasons why trying a summer hip hop dance camp could be an awesome experience for your kids!

1. Keep the Juices Flowing: Throughout the school year, kids spend their days learning new things and building their understanding and knowledge. Summer dance camps are a great resource to keep triggering kid’s brains in a fun and athletic way through physical and observational learning so that their minds keep working until the start of the next school year. Students memorize sequences of steps, rhythm patterns in music, spacing, and formations, keeping those brains active! Studies show that when we make split-second, quick decisions (like when we dance), we create new neuron pathways that increase our intelligence. Give your kids a break from school but keep their minds engaged through dancing!

2. Give Them A Sun Break: We all want to enjoy the sunshine this time of year and we know that kids will run around all day enjoying the heat but many parents might appreciate an alternative way to keep them busy. Dance camps typically take place inside with maybe a snack, lunch, game, or craft break outside for fresh air. Switch up your summer camps a bit and give your child some variation for dealing with the warm weather.

3. Try Something New: Many parents are interested in short commitments for their children until they find what they are truly passionate about. Summer is the perfect time to try a dance style like hip hop to see what really gets a kid moving! Boys and girls love dancing to the latest songs at home and with their friends so bring along everyone and let them experience the excitement of learning moves to their favorite jams! It will never get boring with new and up to date music and the kids will be having a blast for the week!

4. Get Maximum Creativity: If your child is drawn to creativity, summer hip hop camps are a perfect fit! Kids get many chances to share their creativity through movement, games, arts and crafts, and songs. Dance is one of the best ways for kids to express themselves and they will love learning, creating and performing dances that truly come from the heart!

5. Make New Friends: Dancing creates a team-like atmosphere because the participants must work together to create the finished product. Because camps tend to be half day, many kids will schedule play dates with new friends after camp too! This is a great way for kids to make new friends and create special memories that will last a life time!

Five Things To Look For In A Children’s Summer Camp!

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Apr 25, 2014 10:25:00 AM

With summer just around the corner, time is ticking and the pressure is on to find the right summer camp in San Diego for your kids! But don’t worry! You’re not alone and we have put a helpful guide together to help you in your search for the perfect children’s summer camp!

1.  The first and most important thing is the staff:

Every parent is worried about whom they will be leaving their children with all day and that is a completely normal and important concern. That is why it is important to look for a camp which hires experienced staff that will make you and your child feel comfortable. The more experience the better! Try and look for staff that is child friendly and will help your kids feel welcome when they come to camp alone. Other than the friendliness, make sure the camp leaders have been thoroughly inspected by the organization and have passed a security check. If you aren't sure as to what reputable staff looks like, take a look at the EvOLvE list of friendly teachers and read about how we select our awesome staff!

2.  Look at the goals:

When choosing a summer camp in San Diego, it is important to look for the goals that they have set for the children! Make sure summer is not only a time for fun but for learning
as well. The best camps will provide a variety of activities for your children which will enhance your child’s learning skills, and improve their social skills along with teamwork! Look for a camp which really emphasizes the skills you would like your child to develop and is supportive in your child’s dreams!

3.  How hard do they push?

It seems like a weird question at first but it’s definitely one of some importance. During a day camp your child will be kept busy with different sorts of activities. Although these activities can be healthy and beneficial, it is important to not push children too hard and allow them plenty of breaks. Ask about the amount of breaks they will be getting throughout the day, how many potty breaks, snack breaks, etc. What about downtime? Is there a time in the schedule when the kids can take a break from all of the commotion and listen to a story or take a short nap? Even with just a day camp, kids might get overworked and tired so be sure to check if the summer camp you’re looking at provides the right combination of fun and relaxation. For a great reference on how a camp schedule should look like. Check out San Diego's EvOlvE's camp schedules and Chicago's camp schedules SummerCampSanDiego

4.  Communication

As a parent, it is not pleasant being left out of the loop and not knowing what your child is up to all day. Make sure that the camp you are looking at supports open communication between parents, staff and children. Also, as a parent, you want to stay included and have access to any information about your child at all times. It makes you feel comfortable and safe leaving your child in their hands every day.

5.  Fun!

Last but certainly not least, ask yourself if your child will really enjoy this camp! Don’t settle for an average summer camp. Summer is a time for adventure and fun, a time to let your child’s curiosity soar. Dance to EvOLvE prides itself on providing children opportunity to have an amazing time learning and creating with their wonderful teacher. Kids love it and it's not only fun but also beneficial for them. So talk with your children and find out exactly what they want and sign them up for a camp, such as a Summer dance camp in San Diego for example, that will provide them with a variety of activities, challenging and fun, and one that they will miss when they are finished with! This will save a huge hassle of having to switch camps or rearrange plans!

Make the most of this summer and be smart with your decisions! We hope you consider some of these questions when searching for a summer camp in San Diego. Let us know if there are any additional tips for choosing camps or if you have any comments, don’t be shy!

Get Involved In Your Little Dancer’s Education!

Posted by Brittany White on Oct 10, 2013 10:36:00 AM

danceclasseskidsbacktoschoolThe school year has been underway for a while now but it is not too late to take advantage of the opportunity to get further involved in your child’s education! It can not only bring you closer to your child, but also keep you updated on their progress and see where they might be struggling with.

For those of you with children who are on the younger side, you might want to consider one of these options.

  • Volunteer as a class reader. Ask your child’s teacher if it is okay for you to come in to read to the whole class, or even to individual children who might need more guidance.

  • Offer to be a center/lab helper. With these little ones, teaching subjects like science, art or computer lab requires a lot of hands-on help. Oftentimes, teachers can get overwhelmed with the number of students who need help, so if you are interested in these topics, you can offer to come in once a week to be an assistant.

  • Be a tutor. Teachers oftentimes have to handle and teach a wide range of skills and subjects. Parents giving extra one-on-one support to students on the high and low ends of the spectrum lets the teacher spend more time focusing on the middle.

  • Offer to be a class parent. If you have more time to spare, this is a fantastic opportunity. It usually involves organizing parties and teacher gifts throughout the school year.

danceclasseskidsbacktoschoolFor those of you with slightly older children, one of these options may be a better fit for you!

  • Help out with a special interests club or drama group. With teachers being swamped with more and more things and not enough resources, sometimes it's up to the parents to keep extracurricular activities up and running.

  • Present to classes about your career or expertise. One of the most crucial gifts you can bestow upon a child is the gift of inspiration. At this age, most kids have moved past wanting to be a fireman or a superhero and need real-life role models to inform them about other career opportunities.

  • Volunteer as a library assistant. Instead of helping kids get more wrapped up in the technological world nowadays, get kids to go back to their roots by helping them discover books they love or research topics they're excited about. Inspiring them to read more can be a really rewarding experience for parents.

  • Assist with sports programs. Making sure kids stay active is critical to their physical and emotional health. With the lack of school funding for sports programs, parent involvement can help a lot in this area.

danceclasseskidsbacktoschoolAs you may very well know, extra-curricular activities are a great way for your child to not only develop social skills and increase their intelligence but it can also give your child more confidence and relaxation. That is why dance classes are a great way for your child to achieve all of these goals. You may be asking, how can I get involved with my child’s dance classes? Well you are in luck because Dance to EvOLvE offers a YOU&Me interactive parent and child class for toddlers! These classes can not only teach both you and your child how to dance but they can also bring you and your little dancer closer together which is the most important thing!

No matter what you may end up getting involved with, all of these are great options to help you keep track of your child’s progress in school. Get involved now and begin the journey to get closer your child!
