Fun Fourth of July Activities for Kids

Posted by Helen McCarthy on Jul 4, 2017 1:02:00 AM

The Fourth of July is fast approaching! This holiday usually brings time spent with family and friends enjoying a classic summer bbq - and of course everything red, white, and blue. Whether you are attending a block party or celebrating at home, we have some great ideas for getting your little ones involved with some fun Independence Day activities for kids!

The most essential part of any party that you plan is the food! There are so many holiday snacks you can make, and the best part is that you can get the kids involved in the preparation. There is always fun to be had decorating cookies or cupcakes with red, white, and blue sprinkles or frosting. Its great to see all the creative designs the little ones come up with, and they have a blast helping you out. Another great summer dish that they can help you prepare is fruit salad. Not only is this a nutritional addition to any BBQ menu, but it is also such a refreshing, quick, and easy entree to prepare. Whether you just choose to prepare a classic fruit salad using your favorite festive fruit or get creative using cookie cutters to cut fruit into cute star shapes it’s sure to be a hit. You can also have the kids help you make a unique dessert by creating kabobs with fruit, brownies, marshmallows - really anything that you want! These are delicious and effortless!

Moving on from the food, another great area of the prep that the little ones love to help out with is the decorating! This can be a tricky task, but don’t feel like you need to go out and buy decorations that you are only going to use for one day when you can make your own to last for years to come! We found a great way to not only create super cute star suncatchers, but also use all those old crayons you have laying around the house. These festive decorations will definitely be a crowd pleaser at any party, and the kids will have a blast making them with you!

We also have so many DYI craft ideas that kids and adults alike can play with while enjoying the food and festivities! Confetti launchers are the perfect at-home alternative to fireworks without all the safety hazards. There is sure to be fun to have with these confetti cannons for all ages. The kids can help out with creating their own unique designs on the outside of the cannons and will love setting off their own fireworks! Another easy craft that everyone can get involved in is the creation and exploration of slime! Not only can you make the slime Fourth of July themed, but it’s a great Independence day activity for kids. And finally, what better way to cool down on a hot summer’s day than to have a water balloon fight?! You can even split into different teams to have Patriots against the British to have your own historical battle.

The last key ingredient to any party is the music! Make sure to have a playlist planned with all your family’s favorite songs to groove to! Your little ones will love busting out some of the moves they have been learning in their Dance To EvOLvE classes or summer camps, and now is the perfect time to share them with the rest of the family!

And of course, the main attraction of any 4th of July festivities is the fireworks show! Don’t forget to plan out the best viewing sight to enjoy a fireworks show! In San Diego there are usually a few shows to be seen from anywhere along the beach or the bay. From watching the annual parades in Coronado or Old Town to enjoying the day at the Del Mar Fair, to spending the day at the beach. There are so many great Fourth of July activities for kids in San Diego. If you live in Chicago make sure to check out all the parades and music festivals they have located throughout the area! So much fun ready to ensue for the entire family with all the events planned - Chicago is definitely prepared with many activities for kids on Independence Day!

We hope you have a great time trying out some of these activities and exploring your city on this fun-filled holiday! Wishing you all the best dance parties and time spent with those you love with these 4th of July activities for kids!

Hip Hop Camps for Boys & Girls this Summer

Posted by Helen McCarthy on Jun 9, 2017 7:59:34 PM

Hip hop is a style that has been rapidly growing in popularity, and now competes with the leading dance styles. But what is hip hop? After learning a little about the rich history of this unique dance form, you might see the large impact that this piece of the the dance world has! Who knows, you might even think about enrolling you child in one of Dance to EvOLvE’s awesome Hip Hop Summer Camps in San Diego and Chicago!

This relatively new American dance style debuted in the late 1960’s with the advent of hip hop music. The craze spread in the 70’s with the rise of professional street crews, who were not conventionally trained dancers. Complex rhythms of hip hop music combined with the down-to-earth style of traditional African dancing inspired the creation of many disdinct genres of the dance style, with the most prominent being breaking, locking, and popping. While all these techniques are different, they share their roots in street dancing and the improv style.

Interestingly enough, hip hop styles evolved differently on the different coasts. The East Coast is said to be the real start start of hip hop, and best known for the style of breaking. In contrast, the West was later to adopt the style and better known for artists being more robotic with their movements. Something that both of these coasts had in common was the formal and informal competitions that kept this style of dance unique and thriving in the 1980’s. At these competitions dancers pushed themselves to their creative limit to show off their own personalized technique and tricks.

In the next decade hip hop started to break into the mainstream fad dances. Moves such as the running man, the worm, and the cabbage patch were very popular in the 90’s and coincided with revamped hip hop music culture. People who were not “hip hop dancers” started to learn these moves, and in doing so, propelled the status of the dance further into popular culture.

Moving into the 21st century, the hip hop style remains in the forefront of the dance scene. As the style continues to evolve dancers are constantly upping the ante as hip hop has become a mainstay in popular culture. It has come a long way from its beginnings as a street style, as it is now practiced on stage and taught in many dance schools. Hip hop is a popular style of choice for performances and music videos for recording artists, and it is not hard to see why. Unlike some other more traditionally structured styles, hip hop allows dancers endless opportunities to explore fast paced, fun moves movement in his or her unique way.

If you are new to the style of hip hop and not sure how to prepare you little one for a hip hop camp in San Diego or Chicago have no fear - it’s easy! Just make sure your dancer wears appropriate shoes (sneakers are great) and comfortable clothes (sweats and t-shirts are perfect!). Kids Dance Classes in San Diego - New Locations!

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Aug 12, 2014 12:56:00 PM

Dancing is everywhere we look. On the streets, in the kitchen, on the T.V., with so much dancing around us, it can still be hard to find proper kids dance classes in San Diego.  Location is everything! What fun is a kids dance class if it is too difficult or too far to get to? It’s also important to take into consideration commute time on different times of the day. Crossing San Diego at rush hour?  Forget about it!  With location being so important, EvOLvE has made it a mission to provide convenient kids dance studios in fun, accessible areas. Read on to find out more about our up and coming dance locations.

kids dance Studio4S Ranch local dance classes

We are happy to announce that we have a new kids dance class location in 4S Ranch for your convenience! This location is in proximity to a lot of neighboring communities such as Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch and Del Sur. 4S Ranch local dance classes range from tap, ballet, hip hop and combination classes for all ages two through twelve.  An added bonus of our new 4S Ranch dance location is the summer movies in community parks nearby such as Patriot Park, and summer concerts where you and your toddler can practice new dance moves! We ensure that our kids dance studios are in locations that are not only convenient for you but are safe and kid friendly for your dancing superstar.

Carmel Mountain local dance classes

Another place where you can get moving and grooving is our Carmel Mountain location. Similar to 4Skids dance class Ranch, Carmel Mountain is also near several popular communities with lots of fun entertainment to go along with the dancing fun. Our Carmel Mountain local dance class is currently offering a tap/ballet combo Thursday afternoons during the summertime. This popular class introduces movement, coordination and a fun jazz dance day once a month for those who like to switch things up from time to time. Carmel Mountain Ranch also features summer movies in their local parks and will occasionally offer a free kids dance lesson before the movie starts, lead by one of our very own EvOLvE teachers.  Get all the wiggles and jiggles out before the movie starts and your toddler should be good to go for the better part of the movie!

Once you have decided on the best area for your toddler dance lessons in San Diego, you can begin to look at what studios in your preferred area offer; what the teachers teach, background on the studio and age appropriateness of the skills taught. A good kids dance studio will love children, but more importantly know how to speak to and motivate them.  Teaching children is much different than teach adults, and teaching toddlers is much different than teaching 8 year olds, as many of us know from first hand experience!  When you do a trial class, ask yourself: was the music appropriate for the age group? Were the skills challenging, yet achievable? Was the teacher patient?  Was the facility clean and safe?  Last, but not least, ask your child if he or she had fun!  Did your toddler experience lots of laughs and smiles in class? The right dance studio should have the perfect combination of learning and laughter to fully benefit your toddler.

Your convenience matters to us, which is why we provide several easily accessible locations to make dancing a fun and easy activity for you and your toddler. Along with finding a good location for your child's dance lessons comes finding a reliable, trustworthy studio with great teachers who want to further your toddler’s growth. After all, your superstar deserves the best! For more information on Dance To EvOLvE's many locations, check our website.  For updated information, as well as any fun activities or upcoming events, follow us on twitter!

How many parents out there are starting to think about summer camps and vacations?! Summer is filled with so many different options for families to explore. It’s a great time for kids to try new things for as little or as long as they want and find interests that may last through the next year and beyond! So when choosing a summer camp for your kid’s, give them a break from the sun and heat and consider a summer hip hop camp! A Summer Hip Hop Dance camp allows kids to try a fun and modern genre of dance, work quickly towards a performance, and learn in a fun, relaxing environment. Here are some reasons why trying a summer hip hop dance camp could be an awesome experience for your kids!

1. Keep the Juices Flowing: Throughout the school year, kids spend their days learning new things and building their understanding and knowledge. Summer dance camps are a great resource to keep triggering kid’s brains in a fun and athletic way through physical and observational learning so that their minds keep working until the start of the next school year. Students memorize sequences of steps, rhythm patterns in music, spacing, and formations, keeping those brains active! Studies show that when we make split-second, quick decisions (like when we dance), we create new neuron pathways that increase our intelligence. Give your kids a break from school but keep their minds engaged through dancing!

2. Give Them A Sun Break: We all want to enjoy the sunshine this time of year and we know that kids will run around all day enjoying the heat but many parents might appreciate an alternative way to keep them busy. Dance camps typically take place inside with maybe a snack, lunch, game, or craft break outside for fresh air. Switch up your summer camps a bit and give your child some variation for dealing with the warm weather.

3. Try Something New: Many parents are interested in short commitments for their children until they find what they are truly passionate about. Summer is the perfect time to try a dance style like hip hop to see what really gets a kid moving! Boys and girls love dancing to the latest songs at home and with their friends so bring along everyone and let them experience the excitement of learning moves to their favorite jams! It will never get boring with new and up to date music and the kids will be having a blast for the week!

4. Get Maximum Creativity: If your child is drawn to creativity, summer hip hop camps are a perfect fit! Kids get many chances to share their creativity through movement, games, arts and crafts, and songs. Dance is one of the best ways for kids to express themselves and they will love learning, creating and performing dances that truly come from the heart!

5. Make New Friends: Dancing creates a team-like atmosphere because the participants must work together to create the finished product. Because camps tend to be half day, many kids will schedule play dates with new friends after camp too! This is a great way for kids to make new friends and create special memories that will last a life time!

Summer hip hop dance camp

You can find hip hop dance camps through your local studios, community centers, or creative arts programs. Dance to EvOLvE offers hip hop dance camps multiple times this summer and you can find the information for camp dates here! Start searching now and see what kinds of options are available to you this summer! There are so many great exepriences in store for you and your family!

Five Things To Look For In A Children’s Summer Camp!

Posted by Brittany, Dance To EvOLvE on Apr 25, 2014 1:25:00 PM

With summer just around the corner, time is ticking and the pressure is on to find the right summer camp in San Diego for your kids! But don’t worry! You’re not alone and we have put a helpful guide together to help you in your search for the perfect children’s summer camp!

1.  The first and most important thing is the staff:

Every parent is worried about whom they will be leaving their children with all day and that is a completely normal and important concern. That is why it is important to look for a camp which hires experienced staff that will make you and your child feel comfortable. The more experience the better! Try and look for staff that is child friendly and will help your kids feel welcome when they come to camp alone. Other than the friendliness, make sure the camp leaders have been thoroughly inspected by the organization and have passed a security check. If you aren't sure as to what reputable staff looks like, take a look at the EvOLvE list of friendly teachers and read about how we select our awesome staff!

2.  Look at the goals:

When choosing a summer camp in San Diego, it is important to look for the goals that they have set for the children! Make sure summer is not only a time for fun but for learning
as well. The best camps will provide a variety of activities for your children which will enhance your child’s learning skills, and improve their social skills along with teamwork! Look for a camp which really emphasizes the skills you would like your child to develop and is supportive in your child’s dreams!

3.  How hard do they push?

It seems like a weird question at first but it’s definitely one of some importance. During a day camp your child will be kept busy with different sorts of activities. Although these activities can be healthy and beneficial, it is important to not push children too hard and allow them plenty of breaks. Ask about the amount of breaks they will be getting throughout the day, how many potty breaks, snack breaks, etc. What about downtime? Is there a time in the schedule when the kids can take a break from all of the commotion and listen to a story or take a short nap? Even with just a day camp, kids might get overworked and tired so be sure to check if the summer camp you’re looking at provides the right combination of fun and relaxation. For a great reference on how a camp schedule should look like. Check out San Diego's EvOlvE's camp schedules and Chicago's camp schedules SummerCampSanDiego

4.  Communication

As a parent, it is not pleasant being left out of the loop and not knowing what your child is up to all day. Make sure that the camp you are looking at supports open communication between parents, staff and children. Also, as a parent, you want to stay included and have access to any information about your child at all times. It makes you feel comfortable and safe leaving your child in their hands every day.

5.  Fun!

Last but certainly not least, ask yourself if your child will really enjoy this camp! Don’t settle for an average summer camp. Summer is a time for adventure and fun, a time to let your child’s curiosity soar. Dance to EvOLvE prides itself on providing children opportunity to have an amazing time learning and creating with their wonderful teacher. Kids love it and it's not only fun but also beneficial for them. So talk with your children and find out exactly what they want and sign them up for a camp, such as a Summer dance camp in San Diego for example, that will provide them with a variety of activities, challenging and fun, and one that they will miss when they are finished with! This will save a huge hassle of having to switch camps or rearrange plans!

Make the most of this summer and be smart with your decisions! We hope you consider some of these questions when searching for a summer camp in San Diego. Let us know if there are any additional tips for choosing camps or if you have any comments, don’t be shy!

Toddler Dance Class Can Benefit Your Child

Posted by Brittany White on Oct 3, 2013 5:01:00 PM

toddlerdanceclassThis is an age-old question that parents have been wondering about for years. Your little one can start benefiting from dance class from as early as 6 months, but ultimately, it is up to you, the parent to determine when you want your child to begin; depending on what you deem is best for them.

As a teacher and founder of the toddler dance class here at EvOLvE, I can say without a doubt that my dancers never cease to amaze me. At the rate their minds are still growing and expanding, this is a prime time for them to start learning dance and developing the motor and coordination skills that dance teaches. Toddlers are very versatile and you’d be surprised at the vast amounts of knowledge that they can absorb.

Dance to EvOLvE offers a YOU&me parent interactive class for little ones as young as 14 months all the way up until 2 years. Now you may be wondering, “Is this class going to include all the fancy terms and the same structure as a regular ballet class?”   Of course not. toddlerdanceclass

But what we do offer is a fun and creative learning environment in which your little one can start developing essential life skills, such as coordination, social skills, understanding the connection of music to movement, and can help forge a deeper bond between parent and child as well.

What if your child is younger or older than those defined ages? It’s important to keep in mind that every child develops differently, so slightly younger or older students are perfectly acceptable. For example, a 12-month old can enjoy and benefit from the class, but will be physically limited...and that’s okay!Creative Movement classes have a general and more relaxed format to accommodate the various ages.

Students who are eligible for older classes are still welcome to take the Mommy or Daddy & Me class if the parent feels the child is not ready to advance or if the parent is simply looking to get that special experience with their child. toddlerdanceclassMany dance studios say that 3 years old is the average age for a student to start learning dance but there is so much dancing fun to be had before then.

If you’re simply looking for a class that introduces movement, music, and’s never too early to start! Get them dancing!
